I feel that if I want to be effective in how I teach, I always need to keep an open mind and even change the way I do things to cater to the individual student. My job is to be here for the student in whatever capacity they need me. I can push them really hard and really fast, or I can move as slow as they need to. Children who study with me don't just learn how to 'play' the music, they learn how to really 'PERFORM' it--wide range of volume, lots of expression, and true musicality! Teens (13-18) typically prefer to choose their own curriculum. They are mature enough to appreciate a classical background, and we study the great composers and all their famous pieces, which inform their understanding of music history as well. For early students, I typically start with the Suzuki books, as I like the organized technical and musical progression of each piece. As the students develop I begin to add supplimentary materials such as etude and scale books. Students can progress from open strings to Bach with ease. First of all, I always make my students enjoy music when they are learning anything from me. With beginners, I always be patient and kind, especially with young kids. Always singing songs with them, playing together with them and at the same time we will do some music games together. It helps young kids to get to know music and at the same time they won't get bored!
