My teaching methods are largely dependant on the needs and experience of the student. For begining guitar, bass, and key board students I generally work with several method books, and supply supplimentary materials as required. I believe that each student is unique, and what works for one student might not be sutiable for another. I assess a students learning style and develop lesson plans that emphaisze their strenths, and encourge them to develop. Read More

Instruments: Piano Organ Keyboard

I began playing in churches when I was about13. Shortly after that, I became a full-time organist and choral accompanist. I have also directed choirs. My background was mostly concentrated on classical repertoire, but I am able to teach many different styles. After graduating from WSU, I taught for one year in the public school system, but decided it wasn't for me. I enjoy the 1-1 dynamic of private lessons much more. Read More

What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
First off, don't hurry through it! Make sure you set aside enough time to relax and focus on the material. This should be in a distraction free and well lit area. It's best if you can find a place to be alone, although i know that is sometimes a challenge. You also need to learn practice techniques that will help you tackle difficult sections and keep you from getting frustrated. In piano, this could be practicing with hands apart, slowing down the tempo or writing in some of the more difficult notes. Lastly, always have a pencil ready! There is nothing wrong with writing in some reminders in the music!

How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
This of course is different with every student. In regards to the piano, I ask that the minimum age be 5 years old. This will ensure the child's dexterity is developed enough to be able to place his or her hands on the keyboard effectively. Attention span is also a key component as well and will affect the child's development with the instrument. Sometimes if a child has trouble sitting still for 30 minutes, you may want to consider waiting a year or two until the child develops a little further. I of course have learned this seeing that I often had trouble sitting still at that age! ;)

When will I start to see results?
You should began to see growth after the first month. Sometimes sooner depending on the student's age and readiness. My goal to have the student learn something new every week and be able to demonstrate it back to me the following week. This could be a new song, scale, concept or technique. In that sense, each child should be showing results after each lesson. I cannot stress the importance of the student practicing during the week. This will really make the difference between seeing growth and not seeing it.

Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
My high school choir teacher was awesome! She was so passionate and committed to teaching music that it greatly inspired me to make it my passion as well. She was firm and tough and taught me the value and of course the payoff of hard work and practice. She was also an accomplished keyboardist and I always wanted to play like her. I believe that it was her love of music that allowed me to make it though my degree in college, getting through the tough times and discouragement. It helped me keep my eye on the prize and accomplish my dreams!
