For beginning students (regardless of age instrument) I try to simplify the approach and work on a set of warm ups/exercises coupled with a performance piece or song that they can feel good about and lots of fun listening assignments. From there I have a few options of instruction methods that I tailor to the individual student. More intermediate/advanced students will not escape from some of the basics (metronome, scales, rudiments etc.) but will be met with many more choices of performance material based more on their individual goals. I am full of energy and love learning as much as I can, but I also understand that full and in depth skill requires time and a certain level of patience and consistency. I relay this to students by repetition (specifically of principles), though I keep it fun and exciting by varying the application. Once the principle is fully grasped, we move on. I start beginners with the drum rudiments and chart reading. This gets them able to move their hands and feet for better coordination. After they have better coordination I introduce ear training which is playing along to their favorite songs. This teaches the student how toplay with a band. As a drummer that has played in all kinds of styles and venues, I can teach any skill level from the first time picking up sticks to making good drummers great and great drummers legendary.
