I have the same approach to teaching beginner and intermediate piano. Again, we learn our notes in five finger position and then we learn to read time signatures, notes in the treble clef, chords, and rhythms, as well as playing complete songs. When teaching piano for beginners I like to pick the leaning material that we'll use based on the individual because we all learn differently and I like to keep it fun so the student stays interested. My teaching style can vary from student to student but I believe the most important element is that the student remains engaged and enjoys practicing their instrument, regardless of their individual level. If they are very young, I try to have them listen to as much music as possible when they are not practicing because listening to new music is just as important to musical growth as practice. If there is a particular song they are aiming to learn, we tackle it in class and have them practice it at home at least half hour a day. Read More

My method is to help students play the music they want to play, whether it's Miles Davis or the Red Hot Chili Peppers. I like to start my lessons by working on a song of the students choice to spark their interest. From there, I move to focusing on the students needs technically, rhythmically and theoretically. Additionally, I have my students practice improvisation, in some capacity, at each lesson. I want my students to feel comfortably making music on the fly and I set up low stakes environments for them to hone this skill. Read More

For beginning students, I strive to teach the basics of music theory while learning the fundamentals of producing characteristic tone on their instrument. I typically start by working through the Essential Elements method book and introduce solos, ensembles, and orchestral excerps when appropriate. If the student is a part of a school or community ensemble, I work with the student on any pieces that their ensemble is preparing for performance. Read More

I've been teaching music lessons for about two years. I have worked privately with two students in the past for over a year. I believe one of the most important parts of teaching is to make it fun and encouraging. I emphasize the idea of seeing continuous progress on their instrument. This motivates students to set higher goals for themselves and achieve them giving them confidence and joy. I believe the student receives the most value when their instruction is effective and rapid in helping them attain their goals. Read More

For adults who are usually more straight forward with what they want to get out of the lessons, I usually jump straight into asking them about their favorite artists and influences to give me a good idea of where they want to be in the long run. I then begin working out a long term plan/lesson schedule that will get help them reach their goals as soon as possible. Read More
