There are several methods I use as a professor and they're all dependent on the student, their age and their goals. If they are younger, I like to employ elements of the Suzuki method because subjects like musical notation and theory might be too dense for the student. If the student has the aptitude/and or the discipline I can begin to apply a more systemic approach in terms of practice regiments like scales, practicing sight reading, their rhythmic feel, and even ear intonation and sight singing if the student is prepared for it. I like working with students in a way where our love of music is the center of our attention, as such musicality is always the goal. For beginner students who’d like to sight-read, I like to start with the Alfred Modern Guitar Method 1 and supplement that with the Mel Bay Modern Guitar Method, Grade 1, or Frederick Noad’s Solo Guitar 1 if we’re learning classical guitar. Alternatively, if the student wishes to take a route in which he/she does not sight-read musical notation, I like to start with basic picking technique, proper guitar positioning, reading tabs and chord diagrams. But when working with beginners, I tend to focus mostly on developing a good internal sense of rhythm and good listening skills. Then if the student wishes, we may specialize in classical, jazz, rock, latin, or whatever style the student is interested in.
