I have been a professional teacher and performer for ten years, touring nationally with funk, soul, and latin bands. The diversity of my experience as a performer has directly impacted my view on teaching. Excitement about practicing music comes directly from passion for music in general, and a key philosophy to my teaching method is to not only instill correct practices and technique, but to attempt to foster a life-long desire for musical exploration in my students. My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching part time while going to school. I took some time off to travel and focus on my performance career but have taught full time at The Guitar Store in Greenwood for the past 7 years. I have played guitar professionally in the Seattle area for the past 12 years. My main genre is progressive rock, although I love Jazz, Pop, blues, Calypso and many other forms of music! Read More

I like working with students in a way where our love of music is the center of our attention, as such musicality is always the goal. For beginner students who’d like to sight-read, I like to start with the Alfred Modern Guitar Method 1 and supplement that with the Mel Bay Modern Guitar Method, Grade 1, or Frederick Noad’s Solo Guitar 1 if we’re learning classical guitar. Alternatively, if the student wishes to take a route in which he/she does not sight-read musical notation, I like to start with basic picking technique, proper guitar positioning, reading tabs and chord diagrams. I've been teaching guitar since I was in high school. I love the process of helping individuals develop their own musical talent and skill and make the connections that unlock their creativity. Teaching gives me the opportunity to be a part of something bigger than myself; something that can be an enriching and incredibly important part of someone's life. I'm driven by the desire to inspire my students, and in return also be inspired by them. Read More

As a musical teacher, I believe one of the most important goals is to learn to have fun while you practice. If your goal is to become a serious musician, many hours of practice is key but that cannot happen if you don't have the drive and motivation for it, so you must first enjoy what you are doing. I have always found that young children give up on their instruments too quickly because they find it to be too tedious or even boring. Read More

I am a very hands-on teacher. We do lots of improvisation and call and response games and sometimes I turn on a record or even bring a guitar to jam with the student. Playing drums is a very visceral, tactile excersize, and I often tell students, "That right there, that is how it's supposed to sound! Memorize that feeling and try to recreate it everytime." I am also a huge advocate of having students listen to as much music as possible. Read More
