Nothing compares to the feeling you get when you see your pupils happily growing and accomplishing every goal they set up for themselves. Since everyone is unique and works at their own pace, I don't think it's fair to approach every student the same way. It is of paramount importance that instructors not only pay close attention to their student's progress, but also their lack of progress in whatever areas they may be struggling in. Read More

My motto is my students create their own lesson. I formulate lesson plans off of the styles of music you are most interested in. If my student has a more "just for fun" attitude, the lesson will inevitably be a more light hearted feel. If the student would like to focus on more technicalities, that as well is a different approach. However, I do have a more structured plan for younger students. Read More

My teaching philosophy is: Music is inherently fun. My role as a teacher is to cultivate my student's initial musical spark and help my student learn what he or she wants while providing a basic musical foundation. By keeping music fun, students are more likely to learn more and challenge themselves. My style stems from this philosophy; I keep the music fun by focusing on what my students want to learn. My lessons are well structured and prepared. We'll have a weekly lesson planner that outlines and monitors the practices and explains the focus for the week. Planning is not opposed to spontaneously having fun which is a core part of playing music. Planning helps you have fun as you enjoy your success and see how you improve.-Lessons always have a huge hands-on part: We play songs together, jam over chord changes or try to play a melody by ear. I take one lesson at a time while careful to scaffold the information. I want students to improve, but I also want them to know what it is that they must do in order to become a competent musician. I can be tough, but at the same time, I don't mind changing directions and moving from say, ear training to sight reading or some other approach. At the base, I believe that rhythm is the most important concern for a student. Read More

I taught high school band and choir as well as K-5 music education for 35 years. In the public school I have directed musical dramas and up to 4 concerts a year with students of all ages. In the classroom, I taught group piano, recorder, voice, group guitar, many different types of dances and ear training. I did my best to make the lessons fun and my students always looked forward to their weekly music class. Read More

My teaching style can vary from student to student but I believe the most important element is that the student remains engaged and enjoys practicing their instrument, regardless of their individual level. If they are very young, I try to have them listen to as much music as possible when they are not practicing because listening to new music is just as important to musical growth as practice. If there is a particular song they are aiming to learn, we tackle it in class and have them practice it at home at least half hour a day. Read More
