For beginning students, I strive to teach the basics of music theory while learning the fundamentals of producing characteristic tone on their instrument. I typically start by working through the Essential Elements method book and introduce solos, ensembles, and orchestral excerps when appropriate. I've been teaching music, in some capacity, since I was 17 and captain of my highschool's drumline. In college I taught drumset lessons to students of all ages and in graduate school I taught a music theory course for 5 semesters as well as classical percussion to 6th - 8th graders. Getting to know my students, what they like and don't like, what they read and listen to, is one of my favorite things and I think it really helps engender a life long passion for music when a teacher takes a personal interest in the students lives. I enjoy teaching students of all ages! I have taught in the public school for 35 years and have worked with over 5000 students of all ages! I enjoy creating original music in my recording studio and have written many songs. I have played guitar and sang for the Miss Washington program and performed as a solo artist as well as with other musicians. My teaching method consists of a focus on what the student is interested in, using what the student enjoys as a means of developing a comprehensive understanding of music and the guitar. I believe this method keeps students engaged with playing, and makes lessons and practicing fun, rather than feel like a chore. Lessons will deal with subjects such as scales, technique, and music theory. Although they may be tedious, I believe these things are important core elements to really understanding the guitar and music in general, and I would teach them in a way that would be fun for the student.
