My teaching method consists of a focus on what the student is interested in, using what the student enjoys as a means of developing a comprehensive understanding of music and the guitar. I believe this method keeps students engaged with playing, and makes lessons and practicing fun, rather than feel like a chore. Lessons will deal with subjects such as scales, technique, and music theory. Although they may be tedious, I believe these things are important core elements to really understanding the guitar and music in general, and I would teach them in a way that would be fun for the student. For beginning students, I strive to teach the basics of music theory while learning the fundamentals of producing characteristic tone on their instrument. I typically start by working through the Essential Elements method book and introduce solos, ensembles, and orchestral excerps when appropriate. I graduated from the College of Wooster with a Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance and then Florida State University with a Masters of Music in Choral Conducting. I started teaching lessons when I was 16 working for a music day camp in Bellevue, WA. I loved working with young kids who liked rock music and had heart when it came to their love of music. My mom has been a teacher my whole life, and I believe in people passing on knowledge and experiences to each other to help people grow and discover the world.  I think my strongsuit would be in teaching players closer to the beginning of their playing journey, as that was the most formative time for me and when I had the strongest teacher influence in my life. I like working with students in a way where our love of music is the center of our attention, as such musicality is always the goal. For beginner students who’d like to sight-read, I like to start with the Alfred Modern Guitar Method 1 and supplement that with the Mel Bay Modern Guitar Method, Grade 1, or Frederick Noad’s Solo Guitar 1 if we’re learning classical guitar. Alternatively, if the student wishes to take a route in which he/she does not sight-read musical notation, I like to start with basic picking technique, proper guitar positioning, reading tabs and chord diagrams.
