I like working with students in a way where our love of music is the center of our attention, as such musicality is always the goal. For beginner students who’d like to sight-read, I like to start with the Alfred Modern Guitar Method 1 and supplement that with the Mel Bay Modern Guitar Method, Grade 1, or Frederick Noad’s Solo Guitar 1 if we’re learning classical guitar. Alternatively, if the student wishes to take a route in which he/she does not sight-read musical notation, I like to start with basic picking technique, proper guitar positioning, reading tabs and chord diagrams. Getting the student to feel confident, no matter the amount they have played is important to me. I'm a laid-back, happy person and that reflects in the way I teach. My teaching method consists of a focus on what the student is interested in, using what the student enjoys as a means of developing a comprehensive understanding of music and the guitar. I believe this method keeps students engaged with playing, and makes lessons and practicing fun, rather than feel like a chore. Lessons will deal with subjects such as scales, technique, and music theory. Although they may be tedious, I believe these things are important core elements to really understanding the guitar and music in general, and I would teach them in a way that would be fun for the student. My instructional methods are customized to fit the individual student's preferences, goals and learning style. I never force my "agenda" or "method" on anyone. I cater to my students' guitar and musical goals. If a student wants to learn to read music, I generally suggest method books such as Hal Leonard Guitar Method or Alfred Guitar Method.
