My name is Annie Hoffman and I was born with an indescribable passion for music that I long to share with others who have a strong desire to learn! I have been playing violin for over 19 years performing in the San Diego Civic Youth Orchestra from 2000-2009 and then continuing onto Azusa Pacific University Symphony Orchestra, various chamber string ensembles, as well as playing in the Azusa Pacific University Choir and Orchestra Ensemble. For young students I use Faber and Alfred books. As well as Famous and Fun books which have popular tunes to help keep the students motivated to practice. My older students work in the standard Hanon exercise book which helps develop agility and evenness in the hands and fingers. I also teach my students all 12 Major and minor scales, arpeggios, and chord progressions. My more advanced students usually learn classical music and Jazz/Blues Rags series by Martha Mier. Music brings me a lot of joy, and I hope to impart that to my students! It takes time and effort to gain mastery of an instrument, but the resulting freedom and fulfillment of being able to play and enjoy music are more than worth it. It was during high school that I started to teach piano, and my love for teaching music has only grown since then. I love teaching students of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds. Read More

Functional Piano: This is a GREAT method of learning to play the piano without having to take years of formal piano lessons. If you just want to play your favorite melodies and harmonies then " functional piano." is for you. This is an EXCELLENT approach for eitherAdults/ Laymen/novie vocalist/songwrithers/instrumentalist who either want to explore and or create new harmonies and melodies. Topics include 1) Basic chord identification by sound. 2) Understanding chord symbols. 3) How to intrepret a lead sheet. 4) Basic diatonic concepts. 5) Modification of a chord progression. 6) Exchanging chords of similar functions. 7) Voice leading techniques. Instruments: Piano

After assessing the student's age and experience we select a method book or repertoire. I typically suggest the Alfred books for young students. I aim to introduce my students to a variety of repertoire, (from baroque to modern music) but I also keep their goals and interests in mind. I consider music theory, ear training, music reading, and creative music-making just as essential as learning repertoire, therefore I strive to incorporate them in each lesson. Read More

My teaching experience began during my undergraduate career, as I was hired by the Music Department at UC Berkeley to work with non-major music students to tutor and assist them through their music theory and musicianship courses. While receiving my masters, I began teaching private lessons part time 2 years ago, and have been consistently working with students since. I specialize with young beginning to advanced students, teaching vocal technique and introductory keyboard skills. Read More

Instruments: Piano Voice Synthesizer Keyboard

I have been teaching voice and piano to all ages for about 3 years. Many students have come to me saying, I want to learn this song! Much of my experience has been working with students who want to learn to play and sing songs by their favorite artists. I have also spent a great deal of time working with kids ages 6-15. I have found in my time teaching that music is most valuable when appreciated both creatively and technically. Read More

Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
Probably my piano teacher, Dr. Susan Boettger. As a graduate of the Julliard school of music, she was able to precisely see in a student their potential and capabilties in a way that they haven't even realized in themselves yet. She was able to do this because of an absolute mastery in her abilties and understanding of her field to the point where she was able to push and guide someone to be at their absolute best. I think this trait rubbed off on me over time as a teacher even as I have switched instruments. All the things she told me back then that I didnt yet quite understand or see resonate with me now more strongly than ever and it shows in my enthusiasm and willingness to do whatever it takes to see my students success.

What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
PRACTICE SLOWLY. Your mind often understands things faster than your muscle memory can so it is EXTREMELY important to start things out slow and then build up speed as you get more and more comfortable. Playing along to a metronome also helps immensely in order to gauge and measure your learning efficiency as well as promote and insure proper technique. Finally, its also important in the long run to get used to playing to a metronome (or a click) especially if you plan on playing live and or get into recording and composition. Finally, ALWAYS keep in mind that learning is NOT a competition. Its a chance for you to discover new ways to keep yourself feeling motivated and inspired.

When will I start to see results?
It really depends on the person and how much dedicated time one puts into their practices. For some, it might be as fast as 2 weeks. For others, it might take about a month or two. Either way, the main important thing to remember is that how much effort goes in is usually how much that comes out. Its important for me as a teacher to gauge each student's learning capacity and give them tips into practicing more efficiently that caters to their needs and conditions.

How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
Whenever they express enthusiasm and or a genuine interest and desire in it consistently over a period of time. Its important to allow them to explore their curiosity and nurture it at a young age in order for them to have time to develop healthy habits and outlooks on things later on down the road. You never know, it can probably even change their lives like it has for me! Finally, it is important that your child understands the responsibility of commitment before enrolling them into lessons. As the saying goes, "you can take a horse to the river, but you can't force it to drink". Therefore, talk to them and more importantly ENCOURAGE them to keep going when it gets rough for them and see how you can get more involved in their musical journey.
