I have been teaching private lessons since 2003, and am on the music faculty at El Camino College, where I have taught class piano to adult students for 9 years. This year I was the chair of the Music Department at California State Summer School for the Arts (CSSSA), an intensive summer program for high school students, where I oversee a staff of 20 music teachers and program meaningful performances and events for our students. For piano: I have studied with Charlie Banacos, a music master from the New England area for 11 years. For percussion: I have studied with Vic Firth, timpanist of the Boston Symphony and also Alan Dawson, jazz drummer. Read More
Instruments: Piano Trumpet
My teaching experience dates back to my high school, where I started mentoring younger kids and leading brass sectionals at my local high school. Throughout college, I began acquiring more students ranging from locals to fellow college students who were interested in picking up the trumpet as either a hobby or a secondary instrument. For my younger students, I've always tried to put a heavy emphasis on playing every day and starting with very basic, short exercises that help them quickly progress. Read More

Essentials are first. Note names, hand position, mouth position, air, posture, rhythms, sheet music, ear training - it's all important and needs to happen concurrently. Everyone has different strengths; some students are able to handle a large amount of information stacking while others need a more one-at-a-time approach. Music is all about doing several physical and mental things at once, developing self awareness in learning *how* to improve a skill, and myelinating the pathways in your brain for the fastest connections possible. I use a wide variety of methods depending on the student's current ability level, musical preferences, and goals. I'm also willing to work with a method or book that a student is currently using. Generally, my students have a varying ratio of technique/scale study to work on the foundations, an etude/short piece study to help connect musical ideas and teach expression, and a solo piece that is prepared over a long period of time, most likely for a future recital. Depending on the level the student is at I will work with them where they are at and what is needed. If a beginning student I will usually start off with working on scales and use visual tools such as books to help aid the process. I will usually get the student to play or perform some sort of song no matter how simple it is, maybe even get them to make up their own song based off of what they learned. Read More

I start with the basics and for young students do nursery rhymes and songs they know, this makes it more enjoyable for them. I also ask them what music they would be interested in learning and see if I can find an easy version of this. Lately, the Encanto movie has been popular and Ive been teaching younger students these songs. Many of my teen students like to learn Beethoven and other classical composers. Read More

Do you use specific teaching methods or books? (Ex: Alfred, Bastion, Suzuki, Hal Leonard) Why did you choose them if you did?
Yes I use all kinds of specific methods as books. I have all kind of influences. I went to a lot of schools and had all kinds of private teachers. Everything that can work for a student can be brought to the table to study. Everything can be good. A video, a Book or just an exercise that the student wrote down in his notebook. I have plenty of books from different editors and authors. The reason that I collected them is because they are very special well known studding materials as books, Cds, play alongs, videos, training machines.
What does a normal practice session look like for you?
In a calm clean and ordered room. With the proper tools, instruments and specific topics to learn. It has to be quality time. To be aware to identify all the elements on the sound and recognize good postures and relax interpretations. Quality time means to be very focus for an intensified learning. It also means that the session has to be joyful. That the people involved in the process finish happy because they really they learn a new inspiring skill. Also not all the practice sessions are the same. Depends with the moods of the students we always find interesting and fun ways of doing things.
If you have a Music Degree, what is it in (Performance, Education, Musicology, Theory, Composition, etc) and why did you choose that degree?
Performance in Guitar and Voice. I think those 2 instruments are more attach to me. Guitar for being my first and old instrument and Voice because was the instrument I learned after guitar and is so intimate to me. AS my dad thought me guitar influenced me a lot. I wasn't expose to all the instruments. Guitar was in my life and I grabbed and loved. Before I went to voice school or have any voice teacher, I started singing by my self in my room. My voice was bad at the beginning but my guitar helped me to tune better. Till I was already singing good and people accepting my voice sounded good.
What is your dream piece to perform and why?
As I have a lot of different influences of styles and instruments. My dream peace could be different ones. Every style can be so special and have its own qualities. One song or melody can be so special for a certain type of instrument. An instrument that bring the music up while others just complement in the background. I like to learn songs in all the instruments by memorie can be easier than reading the music in all different keys and transposing it to a new instrument. A dream piece to perform can be Concierto de Aranjuez from Joaquîn Rodrigo o la Partita de John Sebastian Bach to name a few. The reason is because is very deep music that touch hearts.
