For all students, regardless of age or skill level, I like to gauge their musical interests (i.e., what music they listen to, what inspired them to pick up the guitar, etc.), and then work from there. For someone who has never picked up an instrument before, I generally work out of Hal Leonard's Guitar Method Book 1. For adults, I teach based on the interests of the student; however, I also encourage a jazz and classical-based pursuit, as this will inform most other styles of music and strengthen the performance ability and musicality of the student. I've been teaching privately since I was in high school when I taught beginner trombone and euphonium to middle school and junior high students. I love teaching because it is absolutely incredible watching a beginner blossom into a passionate and talented musician and being there every step of the way to watch their growth.
