I believe anyone has the ability to learn music. I feel it is my duty to help my students discover their own musical path. I approach each student as an individual. Some students take things slow and steady, while others I can barely fit enough into their weekly lessons to keep them happy, and either way is just fine. My ultimate goal as a teacher is to make myself obsolete - I aim to teach my students how to learn, how to be critics of themselves for more effective practice time, and eventually, how to either need a teacher that can take them to more advanced levels, or to play without a teacher. My teaching experience started in 2010 during my college freshman year when I was employed by the Music Institute of North Texas and the Carrolton Independent School District as a private violin instructor. On top of violin pedagogy, I was also employed by the University of North Texas Learning Center as a Supplemental Instructor for Music Theory. In 2014, I began teaching students privately. I taught multiple students of different ages, with a range from early childhood to late adulthood. Most of my students were beginners, and we worked together for over a year. By the end of our time together, they were able to play fairly advanced music for the time they had been playing, such as "La Folia" by Corelli and "Jesu, the Joy of Man's Desiring" by Bach. In order to enjoy playing our instruments for many years to come, I emphasize the importance of healthy technique in order to prevent injury. Through the process of learning scales and pieces, I make sure to incorporate a focus on correct posture, a relaxed left hand, and healthy bow arm so that playing the violin is a positive experience for each student. I use a wide range of materials depending on a student's interests and background - I often teach music reading to students who are reading for the first time, and for students who are already able to read music I modify our lesson materials to reflect this. I enjoy teaching so much because I am able to watch each student develop a passion for music, work towards rewarding careers, and grow a great sense of curiosity. Watching students work through challenges and become excited about music is very rewarding. Students in my studio are encouraged to take on new challenges, but also to learn at their own pace. I also place an emphasis on learning what I can about my students in non musical settings so I can best learn how to communicate with them so they feel comfortable and successful. Many students feel comfortable talking through concepts and techniques while others prefer detailed written instructions in a take home journal. I give all my students the opportunity to work on new and difficult things in the safe atmosphere of a lesson to ease potential frustration in their in home practicing. Read More
