I began teaching private students in high school, and have been consistently teaching students in my studio for the past five years. Many of my students have gone on to be very successful in youth orchestras, school programs, and music conservatories. During my senior year at university, I had the opportunity to serve as a faculty member for my university's pre-college music program. For the beginning string player I like to start with a Hal Leonard method book to communicate and help string players master the basics. Once the student has progressed I will begin some solo repertoire from varying genres. I find it is always helpful to allow students to play music that they enjoy - experiencing a range of both popular and classical pieces to broaden their horizons. I began teaching in 2009, with private students. The following year, I began working with non-profit organization, for two years, that brought music to at-risk and underprivileged children. After working with them, I began working with the Baton Rouge Arts Council, bringing music and music appreciation to elementary school class rooms for children and schools that did not have a music teacher, on staff. I usually start all of my piano students from the Alfred series. Those that are more advanced will complete the curriculum quicker.. Alfred seems to offer a more detailed instruction technique. It offers step by step instructions. The student can almost teach himself. For guitar I use the Everyday guitar method. This method introduces each string at a time. I encourage regular practice, as students who feel they are progressing and doing well tend to enjoy their instrument more. As they become more advanced, they are encouraged to start giving opinions on what they want to learn.
