Instruments: Piano Guitar Voice

After completing my BA in public relations I was awarded a teaching assistantship at the University of Arkansas to teach the basic speech requirement. I became pregnant and did not complete my MA but began teaching private piano lessons part time while raising my children. As the needs of my family changed I began working with children in other ways such as coaching ball teams. For 10 years I served on my citys Parks Board and have worked as a local coordinator for foreign exchange students. Read More

I love working with children and helping them discover the piano and the joy of playing music. I graduated from Baylor University with a Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Pedagogy and have been teaching ever since. I am an active member of the Richardson Music Teachers Association, which affords many musical opportunities for my students. My students participate in several festivals through RMTA throughout the year, and also participate in the state theory exam, if desired. Read More

I truly believe that if students are happy and enjoying what they play they will want to practice and sound better. I encourage students to try classical but we will dive into a more modern approach. Original compositions can also be a fun great way for students to want to practice. I also have a strong music theory and technology background to really make sure they are amazed by understanding the world of music. Read More

I take  a physiological approach to singing...after all it is a physical endeavor.  The voice or larynx, despite all it complexities, is just another set of muscles that can be trained to reach its fullest potential.  The method I teach, “The Franco/Italian Bel Canto Method” has been taught in Europe for more than 200 years and has produced the world’s greatest classical singers.  Now, having said that let me assure you that studying this method doesn’t mean you have to become a classical singer.  The techniques used are designed to strengthen and improve the quality of the human voice and can be applied to any genre whether your goal is “Broadway,” “American Idol” or you simply want to improve your voice for your own personal satisfaction.  The method also addresses all things associated with singing, such as breathing, posture and stage presence. Instruments: Piano Voice Saxophone Organ

I've been in the field of music education, production and performance for over 20 years. I have spent half of my life helping others find their path in music. One of the most important lessons I have learned as a teacher is that...."people don't care how much you know until they know how much you care!!!!" I understands that building a relationship with a student is just as important as the information I teach. Read More

Depending on my student's age and skill level I usually have them begin with Suzuki books, Essential Elements books, or a combination of the two. As students advance I often incorporate etudes and/or exercises by Lee, Dotzauer, Galamian, Mooney, Sevcik, Duport, and Popper. While ear training is an essential skill that I teach to all of my students, the younger a student is the more I'll have them "play by ear" instead of reading sheet music. Read More

Instruments: Piano Trumpet Recorder Music Keyboard

Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
My dad, was a band director. Therefore I watched him play trumpet I wanted to too. I ,started playing at the early age of 5. My grandfather and grandmother were "music men" They would start bands in their communities wherever they lived. It was in Oklahoma where they first started their first band.

What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
Practicing effectively is slowing down and working through each piece of music note by note. If their is a missed note than that note must be found. Once found student should play the phrase at least 5 times without mistake, then go back and put it in the piece of music. After 5 non mistakes through the mistaken wrong note should disappear. Most beginning students will try to play by ear. A teacher can always tell when the student is grasping and not getting it. If a student rushes through practice it will be evident in the next lesson. Well practice can be 10 min. to 30 min. depending on the mind set of the one practicing.

How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
After teaching for 25 years plus I have learned that if a child is ready for lessons then it should be their idea, because this will encourage self motivation. Practice if the key to playing the piano or any other instrument. If the child is unwilling to sit down and go over what was taught at the previous lesson, then the child is most definitely not ready to take lessons. My rule of thumb is if the child knows their ABC's and can count to ten then anyone can learn music, just have a willingness to learn and spend time and practice.

What musical accomplishments are you most proud of?
I earned a lot of outstanding awards growing up. Including outstanding performance in Jazz Trumpet at a Six Flags festival. Region, Area bands, A character education program I wrote and published sold into 400 plus elem schools nation wide. 1997-

Why did you choose your primary instrument?
My dad played the trumpet, he was a band director. Therefore I picked up the trumpet in Kindergarten after watching him play it for all my life. I also remember my mother playing the piano for her school musicals for elem. school. I became an elem music teacher and I had to use the piano in my own classroom musicals.

When will I start to see results?
You will start to see results every time the student picks up their instrument. Instruments have to be practiced in order to improve. Results are seen almost immediately if you practice and apply what you have learned.

Ten Tour Tips For Bands Hitting The Road This Summer

...more attention than others, consider investing a little money into a Facebook ad campaign focused there. This will help further your momentum in a city and increase your chances of people coming out to see you.   Tour Tips #9: Keep your tours short   In my opinion, it’s better for a band to embark on multiple short tour rather than long ones. A great tour can do incredible things for a band, but a bad tour has the potential to make a band never want to speak to each other again. If you’re new to touring, try booking a few... Read More

How To Tune A Guitar

...Every year, millions of people set out to learn how to play the guitar, but sadly many of those people never fulfill their goal of learning how to play this incredible instrument. Why? For younger students especially, figuring out how to tune a guitar is a difficult skill that can be incredibly difficult to practice and master. Without being properly tuned, a guitar cannot be played correctly.   Compared to other common instruments like the saxophone or even a drum set, the guitar is a relatively easy instrument to pick up. The concept of pressing down strings hard enough to ... Read More

Bar 1, C for two beats and G for two beats; Bar 2, Am for two beats and F for two beats; Bar 3, C for two beats and G for two beats; Bar 4, C for a full measure.   Once you become familiar with chord charts, you’ll never want to go back. It’s just easier to see where you’re going when you have a map. And, it’s especially helpful when you’re not familiar with the song or there’s a section of ... Read More

The Bass Trumpet- A Brief Overview

...the valve trombone, but think of the bass trumpet as having a harder tone (it really is a trumpet, just down an octave or two!). The confusion between the two can also be blamed on some modern instrument manufacturers who make versions of the bass trumpet that are nothing more than valve trombone tubing bent in a different shape.   Think of it this way: if you buy a cheap model of a bass trumpet, you are likely getting a re-fitted valve trombone (and there isn’t necessarily anything wrong with that).   The Bass Trumpet’s Origins While the modern bass ... The Kodály Approach – More than Hand Signs

...way to think about a sequential approach. Essentially, each concept builds upon one another, with early learning serving as the foundation for more complex concepts. Think of it in terms of a staircase: without the bottom step, you would not have a place to put the second, and so on and so forth. Music education functions very much the same way. Let’s look at an example. In a Kodály inspired sequence, one of the very first concepts introduced in Kindergarten is “steady beat.” It is the fundamental musical concept by which all other music learning is built upon. Once a ... Read More
