My teaching experience dates back to my teenage years where I taught beginner students the basics of piano.Later in my college days I helped students with limited musical backgrounds learn the basics of music theory. I believe beginner piano students should start with the basics but also learn contemporary chord theory so they can soon begin to play with others.This is more important if they are older.I think this combination is helpful in motivating them to practice which creates the fastest progress. My students were often times older than me so I was forced to adapt fast and develop lesson plans that might not be "standard". I did not specificly stick to particular music series in the market as I believe it is best to choose the music books that match with the age, personality and learning style of a student. I had started with Alfred, Faber and Hal Leobard for my young beginners. I will also introduce students with Suzuki methods if I think this is a better fit.As for later or adult beginners, I used Faber, Alfred, and John Thompson series as the starting material, and give instructions along with the students' interest. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with teaching basic music theory, scales, and start with John Thompson's Easiest Piano Course for the piano students. For Cello beginning students, it's very important to have a correct playing position. Therefore, we will spend some time on knowing cello, position for both hands, and then we will start with Suzuki. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. Read More
