I begin with a thorough assessment to determine a path from the student's current goals to their abilities. If for instance, a beginner wanted to be an RB guitarist, we'd select some of his or her favorite players and recordings, identify elements of interest and, in conjunction with his or her current abilities and use that to formulate practice material. I like to tie the fundamentals of technique, expression and theory to learning songs. Read More

While still in college, I was a music tutor at North Star in Hadley For two years. I worked one-on-one with students in middle school on both voice and guitar. During my time there, I taught kids anything from different chords on the guitar, to breath support and passion in one's singing, to vocal improvisation and stage confidence. I've been away from teaching for a couple of years, but with the a Capella group, I have to accommodate for twelve different people and their learning styles. Read More

I first began teaching in high school, helping to get fellow classmates comfortable on the guitar. While at Berklee I taught music in a K-12 public school context as part of my student-teaching initiative. After graduating from Berklee I found that teaching private lessons gave me a challenge that I loved and found fulfilling. I really enjoy creating a custom plan for each student to help get them to where they want to go in playing an instrument. Read More

I strongly believe that everyone is very different. Learning styles and musical goals are very much a part of this. Some find reading from a book helps them, so for most students I begin by recommending "A Modern Method For Guitar" from the Berklee Press, however for others a book is not as helpful as listening to some music and watching someone play. I like to introduce as much theory as is desired from the student because theory is a very important part of the musical process, but if the student prefers to get playing first and understand the “why” later then we can work something out in that regard. Depending on musical interest, we can work with different genre's and pieces to promote specific techniques and practice routines. Read More

A weekly homework assignment of memorizing the chord or chords learned in the days lesson will be given. After three chords or so are feeling good, we can move on to learning a basic song! Many songs are just three chords. (my first was knockin' on heavens door) Pace of learning is respected and different for each student. I am fully open to pace and speed of learning. It takes time! I started teaching music lessons privately in my early college years, and subsequently was hired as the bass instructor for a local music school. There I taught one-on-one lessons, as well as group band lessons. I like to approach teaching by finding what style of music the student identifies strongest with and then finding ways to incorporate theory, exercises, and technique into what the student already enjoys. taking music lessons should never be boring, and the easiest way to avoid that is to teach what the student enjoys.
