What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
In the words of Itzhak Perlman: ‘Practice Slowly!’ In the words of my imaginary Dharma teacher: ‘practice softly!’ I strive each day in my own practice to marry one to the other in a marriage that perhaps does not need marrying! I tend to enjoy instilling rhythmic excerices that will enae healthy coordination to develop between the left and right arms and hands as well as sides of the body as well as necessitate the need for bodily awareness. I utilize intonation practices that allow for healthy growth and development of well attuned and sharpened listening abilities. Dependent upon one’s unique situation, I am an avid provider of personalized learning: each individual gets what they need when they need it: the rate at which one can healthily digest information is extremely important and I tend to be sensitive to the individual and their unique learning style. Though meditation is integral to my personal theories about teaching, it is the organism of the student teacher relationship that decides whether or not this would be a helpful supplement to their practice as to the extent at which it is examined depends upon the seriousness of the student, the individual development of the student and the development of the relationship between teacher and student.

How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
They will be ready to begin lessons when they ask. They will be ready to begin lessons when they seem curious about the instrument and/or music in general. They will be ready to begin lessons when they are ready to practice. They are ready to begin lesson when they are curious!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When will I start to see results?
This depends upon the individual learner and cannot be answered specifically. Some will develop quite simply faster than others due to a variety of variables that include the environment that one is learning in, the level of curiosity and excitement about learning to play the instrument, the level of discipline that the learner has, the level of lucidity that the learner has, the level of support both internally and externally and the level of focus the learner has within a given practice session. The extent to which each of these variables matter will also variate dependent upon the individual’s style of learning and their personal life. Although it is entirely important to practice everyday, the quantity of time spent practicing does not equate to the quality of energy exerted!
