I am a laid back instructor that knows when the setting is right to encourage the student by leading them in the right direction to achieve their specific and unique goals. Each student is different and what works for one will not always work for another. By reminding the beginning student that we are all human and even the best musicians have started as complete amateurs, they can feel more comfortable making mistakes freely, that are bound to happen without feeling self-conscious. In my lessons I integrate music theory with instrumental technique as I feel that comprehension of the music is essential to better performance and developing better musicianship. I will work with students to help them learn repertoire that they are interested in and excited about as well as serving them their healthy music vegetables to help them develop as musicians. There are several methods books that I like to work with; Read More

For younger students, I typically start with showing them how to develop hand strength using a number of exercises. I then move on to scales, playing them in conjunction with 3rds and triads. Once the student has progressed I will begin to introduce chords and then connect the concepts using music theory. I try to get all my students to understand the number system, modes, and the ability to transpose simple songs that they are currently learning. Read More

In regards to lessons it is my intention to first and fore most understand the student, what they want to learn, and why they want to learn it. -I have a strong understanding of music theory which is something I would like to pass on to my students. -I apply technique for getting comfortable with the instrument, as well as theory to understand the ins and outs of the instrument. For beginning students, I normally start with Alfred's Drum Method. This book works on the fundamentals of reading snare drum music and basic technique. Once the students grasps the basics on reading and playing with a metronome then we tend to move to Tommy Igoe's Groove Essentials (while still working on the Alfred's Method). After the student has began to play with the audio tracks and have succesfully gone through a few lessons from Groove Essentials then we begin to work on some solo repertoire and personal favorites as well. I feel that if I want to be effective in how I teach, I always need to keep an open mind and even change the way I do things to cater to the individual student. My job is to be here for the student in whatever capacity they need me. I can push them really hard and really fast, or I can move as slow as they need to. I never liked having a teacher that yelled at me or said words I found discouraging.....it certainly didn't make me look forward to going to the lessons. Read More

I have also done some recording at Sigma Sound in the 70's with a group that wrote its own material. I am currently playing Guitar and Mandolin in a Christian Rock band. My first love has always been teaching. I'm a people person and enjoy the one on one with a student and enjoy watching their progress and helping them grow into an accomplished musician. I have always put my students first and treated playing as a second preference. Read More
