I learned from the best (Dave LaRue, Oscar Stagnaro, Bruce Gertz & Joe Santerre) and from years and years of performing live with countless original and cover bands, stage bands, wedding bands, jazz ensembles, big bands, orchestras and marching bands. My first teaching experience, though not musical, was as a martial arts instructor at the Cuong Nhu dojo I attended from age 7 to 18. I was a teachers assistant by age 12 and would lead childrens and adult classes up to twice a week by age 14. I make sure that beginner students understand the instrument and start with the proper technique before they can develop bad habits. I try to pick a song or finger exercises for them each lesson as well as a few exercises where they can develop their reading skills. This varies depending on the student. I will typically design my lessons around the student's own individualized needs. I believe that there are many avenues that students can go down on the musical adventure. In the very beginning, there are basic, fundamental things that need to be learned, and repeated, but after that has been accomplished, it can go in many directions. I feel that if a student can make a personal connection with music that they love, and learn how to express that through their instrument of chouce, then their learning is both accelerated and enhanced. I started teaching friends various instruments and general music theory as a freshman. Then I continued my teaching with tutoring my fellow bass students with more difficult material. Now, after having graduated from Rowan University, I teach with the Resonance School of Music teaching guitar, clarinet electric bass and upright bass. While Resonance is certainly a more traditional approach, I like to think I balance it out by also teaching at a School of Rock, giving instruction on both guitar and electric bass. Read More
