I have been teaching for 25+ years in schools and privately. The crucial part of my teaching method is an individual approach. We all are different and that makes teaching more fun but it also makes it challenging and at times very difficult. It takes a lot of patience and experience to unlock one's individuality in learning and performing. I do use books at the same time I try to develop student's ears. Read More

I have been a music instructor for 13 years now. I have taught different categories of students ranging from 2-65 years old. I started off as a classical teacher for a church choir, in which i taught for 7 years. My students find listening and playing their musical instrument very enjoyable, where personal practice becomes interesting and looked forward to. My students are driven by the joy of the learning process and this has been a reason they improved at a great pace! Read More

Instruments: Voice Violin Viola Fiddle

I've performed in several orchestras at the college level and competed in a variety of fiddle contests throughout the state of Texas, most recently the Fiddler's Frolics in Hallettsville, Texas. I have been a volunteer after-school violin instructor in the Houston Independent School District (Roosevelt Elementary, Gallegos Elementary, and Martinez Elementary) and local Jewish community centers. I'm also very active in the Houston opera and theater communities and have performed in nearly a dozen productions in the area, often in small accompanying orchestras and as a soprano and/or actress. Instruments: Voice Drums

I have always believed that music is a conversation between the musician and the audience, and the instrument is the interpreter. With this in mind, with any age, I start with a regular conversation. Knowing the passion, interest level, and motivation of the students helps me create a method of teaching that is specific to the individual. I also learn their experience and knowledge level. I then let the student show me their skills by playing a little, allowing them to loosen up and get comfortable with me, while I analyze and access strengths and weaknesses. Read More

Instruments: Voice

As a kinesthetic learner, I have always had a tendency of using colors, rhymes, similarities, acronyms among other things to ease my learning ability of which I have found myself using a similar method when explaining a concept to one of my students. Setting short and long term goals allow for me and the student to be enthusiastic to learn and eager to step into our next lesson. Keeping an open conversation and weekly challenges to keep the student motivated and have something to look forward to. Read More

Instruments: Voice

I have my students start with sufficient stretching to get the body ready for singing. Following that, I warm up their voices with different scales and specific singing exercises, which I will use independently with students in different levels. Afterwards, we work on the music. I usually pick the music for my students. However, if there is a piece of music that my student particularly wants to learn, I am willing to compromise as long as it is suitable for his/her voice. When did you decide to become a professional musician? Was it a gradual decision or was there a defining moment for you?
What's more fun then playing music and perfoming with friends or family! After I did a couple of gigs and thought, All this fun and we get paid too! I was hooked!

Does music run in your family? Tell us a little about your musical family members.
Yes my Father won a song writing contest put on by Eddy Arnold in the 50's. Eddy arnold recorded his song and my father performed the song on Eddy Arnolds sindicated Radio show.

If you play more than one instrument, how did you decide to start playing the second? (Or 3rd, 4th, 5th, etc)!
Easy question......We had too many guitar players and we needed a bass player so i stepped up to the plate. Easy question......We had too many guitar players and we needed a bass player so i stepped up to the plate.

What is your favorite style/genre of music to play and why?
Blues, Jazz, Latin, Rock, in no particular order. Blues, Jazz, Latin, Rock, in no particular order. Blues, Jazz, Latin, Rock, in no particular order. Blues, Jazz, Latin, Rock, in no particular order.

What is your dream piece to perform and why?
I Love "Weather Report"... anything from the Heavy Weather Album. I Love Miles Davis, just about anything from that album. Johnny Winter was my introduction to Blues...I like a lot of his tunes so it would be difficult to narrow down to one tune. I have a very broad pallet!

If you weren't a musician what do you think you'd be doing instead?
I've never given that any thought. I've never given that any thought. I've never given that any thought. I've never given that any thought. I've never given that any thought.

If you have a Music Degree, what is it in (Performance, Education, Musicology, Theory, Composition, etc) and why did you choose that degree?
I took all the music classes and didnt finish the academics. I would not recommend this to anyone, but it is the path i chose. My Applied Major was Voice, but my interest was far more diverse... I had a real interest in Music teory and understanding all I could about that subject. I went so far as to go to another college and take all the music classes from that as well..... its better to get a degree!

Do you use specific teaching methods or books? (Ex: Alfred, Bastion, Suzuki, Hal Leonard) Why did you choose them if you did?
Any Beginner Method book will work... I tend to use Hal Leonard, because that is what is available. I use my teachers book Complete Jazz Guitar Method by Vincent Bredice, published by Mel Bay

What do you think is the hardest thing to master on your instrument?
Chord Melody guitar playing. All elements of guitar are hard until you have accomplished all the essentials. Practicing all arppegios, chords scales in every postion on the guitar is verychallenging. Soloing is also difficult.

What does a normal practice session look like for you?
This will depend on what the outcome is. Specifically i spend time working through tunes for a particular artist. I may or may not write charts depending on how complicated and how much time i have to devout to it.

Have any of your students won awards or been selected for special honors? How have they succeeded?
I have a student that was a professor at a University, One that Plays with a Famous Coutry artist, and another who has his on guitar method, website and a fantastic musician!

What musical accomplishments are you most proud of?
Playing in a Band that is a top ten Billboard Blues Charts Ensemble! Playing with some of the best drummers in the world right in South Florida.

Why did you choose your primary instrument?
This is a hard question. I have several primary instruments... I enjoy the challege of Playing bass and singing, the challenge of soloing on guitar and love them equally.

Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
I have had many teachers inspire me, not only just teachers but also musicians of many different instruments, vovalists, Guitarists, Bass players, sax players, drummers.... Vencent Bredice taught me how to learn as well as how to teach.

How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
They must be ready to spend a minimum of 30 minutes a day practicing. if they can sit and take a 30 minute lesson then they can take lessons.

When will I start to see results?
Every student is different and learn at a different pace... I would say 6 weeks would be an average time frame to see results if they practice dilligently.

What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
Don't spend too much time on one area. keep intense focus for 5-10 minutes and move onto another area. example: 1. Practice the Melody for 10 minutes 2. Practice chords for 10 min 3. Practice arpeggios for 10 min...etc...

Ear Training for Musicians: A How To Guide

...theme.   Major 2nd (M2) Two half-steps away from root- “Chopsticks,” by Chopin   The major 2nd is a consonant interval. Though it’s found in nearly every vocal melody in a major key you can think of, it’s most famously heard in the opening notes of “Chopsticks” by the composer Chopin. Starting with C, move up to the note of D and you’ll get a major 2nd. If you play the notes simultaneously, you’ll get a sound that resembles “Chopsticks.” It can also be heard on the melody from the “Happy Birthday” song.   Minor 3rd... Read More

Basic Saxophone Maintenance: Caring for Your Instrument

...to avoid needing to get your instrument professionally worked on more than is necessary.   The saxophone is made of mostly brass, but the pads (underneath each key) are made of leather. Leather and water do not mix so well. When we play the saxophone, we are constantly blowing moisture into it. After each performance or practice session, you want to get the moisture out as soon as you can. You should use a swab every time you are finished playing. If you don’t use a swab, the leather pads will suffer extra damage and, over time, possibly tear, causing a multitude ... Read More

Soloing Over "Autumn Leaves"

...to today. At that specific time in my learning process, I didn’t understand jazz from a theoretical standpoint. I treated each chord as its own entity; self-contained. Each word as its own, not part of a sentence. For example, instead of seeing the first four bars as a common ii-V-I-IV progression, I simply saw a C-7 chord followed by an F7 chord followed by a Bbmaj7 and then an Ebmaj7. I’m curious to hear what that sounded like. It probably sounded pretty choppy and phrase-less. If you’ve read most or all of my blog posts so far, you should be well ahead ... Read More

Intro to Jazz Bass Technique

...used by the jazz bass player also depends on how many players are in the group. The more players there are, the more space you have to leave for other instrumentalists and by contrast less players sometimes requires more playing or notes to fill out the texture.     Musical Patterns   While it is true that a certain amount of theory or musical understanding is required to play jazz, the most important thing is to understand musical patterns. I rarely think about note names when playing jazz bass lines – what I do understand is how to play interval patterns! I ... Read More
