I am a lifelong student of music and veteran music teacher who is dedicated to bringing the love of music to others. I began playing piano and clarinet as a young child and chose music as a future career when I was in sixth grade. My bachelors degree, from East Texas State University, is in music education with a concentration in piano and clarinet. I received a masters degree from Wichita State University in music literature and history as I have always had a love for classical music. Read More

Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs. Read More

Believing that each student deserves individual approach, I am enthusiastic to help people of all ages to learn, grow, and succeed in music. Throughout my 15 years of experience, I have learned that young students develop their knowledge slowly in time, in their own pace. In first part of the lesson, the student plays scales, arpeggios and chords as a warm-up, following by short technical exercises, which expose him or her to new musical situations, and develop the playing skills. My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching private lessons part time 15 years ago, and have been consistently teaching students in my home studio for the last 10 years. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument. I've also found that a combination of classical, gospel, christian, jazz and modern music can go a long way in helping students enjoy the piano and motivate them to practice and continue to learn. I taught children and adults from beginners to advanced intermediate. There I coached choirs of beginners to sing classical and folk music of high quality and did outstanding concerts around the island. All along I never ceased to teach myself new disciplines. I self taught counterpoint Renaissance style and some time ago while in Toronto Canada I was able to coach a university student there on Counterpoint when she was having trouble for her test in which she finally excelled after our lessons. I motivate my students by being interactive. With children who are new to music, I use my personal method, which is characterized by providing knowledge while playing interactive games, which helps the children grasp music-related issues. With the older students, I try to inspire them by playing duets, accompanying them, and placing emphasis on a variety of repertoire. Some of them might even perform on the stage in the small recitals prepared by myself every year. Read More

I was sitting home minding my own business when a friend called me and asked if I was free that night. He had a job with Bo Diddly and needed a piano player. That was a real kick. After that I started a duo playing easy listening music in local restaurants. We got a lot of good paying work. I moved to Florida with my wife and started doing boat jobs on the intercoastal: New Years Eve I had to remove my Tux jacket because it was to warm. Read More

What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
There are certain steps to take in order to practice more effectively. First, practice the music by measure, and cut the measure in half if you need to. The more you cut those difficult passages of music into smaller pieces the easier it would be to learn. Think, bite-size mini measures. (This also cuts practicing time up to 50 % so practice smarter not harder! Practicing slow = faster learning. If something is getting frustrating just stop and go to something else. It's better to practice another piece of music than to stop practicing all together!

How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
You know your child is ready to start lessons if they bug you about it, you buy them the instrument, they start taking lessons and you don't have to bother them about practice! When a student doesn't give you a hard time about practice, you know they are ready to make the commitment to practice and learn their instrument. When they sit at the piano without you telling them to you know they have a passion for learning. And for younger kids such as toddlers and children ages 4- 6; when you see they look forward to lessons every week, they are ready to make the commitment to taking lessons.

When will I start to see results?
That's a really good question. The answer really depends on how much you put into this. Like anything in life, the more you commit, the more you get out of it. I've seen students take years and years to learn an instrument and I've seen students learn how to play the piano in two- five years. I've also seen students start playing a song in the first lesson! And then I have students come back to class with a lesson that hasn't been learned. This all depends on you. Practicing every week, coming to class prepared, being on top of your child's practice routine, all of these things are important.

Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
Yes, I had a teacher that inspired me. Honestly, it was my piano teacher. Before I took piano, my older sister did. Every time I accompanied my sister to her piano classes, I used to love hearing her teacher play. It wasn't long until my mom asked her if I can play also and, I soon started taking piano lessons. I used to love coming to piano class, and going to recitals every year. I also liked taking my piano exams at the end of the year because that's when I got my trophies and certificate. I still have them, now they're in my piano studio!

Why did you choose your primary instrument?
I chose the piano because, If you can play the piano you can pretty much learn any instrument you want. The piano is the foundation of all of the instruments. Theory wise, you can also understand theory concepts much faster because you can literally see the theory concepts right in front of you. And of course, I love the sound. Another fun fact, it makes it really easy to write music too. When I'm not teaching I like to write music in the studio. What I also like about the piano is that you can also solo. You really don't need anyone else to play the melody or the harmony, the piano can do both!
