For beginning students, I always start with technique and posture, as improper technique can be catastrophic to your playing down the line. From there we'll cover the basics, such as chord shapes, strumming patterns, and scales. On top of that, each student will receive a "riff of the week", a guitar riff from a song that is in line with their particular music tastes. For example, if the student in question likes Punk Rock music, every week we'd go over a riff from a popular Punk song. Read More

My methods are not standard, I believe in teaching technical sides of an instrument and the creative sides. For younger students I will teach them the basics of chords and progressions, eventually leading to write their first songs. For young adults and adults I want to have them learn chords, styles, and the uses of their instruments. Creativity will always be the most important thing to hone. Finding inspiration through practice and jamming with a friend or even a teacher is something I want to teach. Read More

I like to tailor my lessons towards the styles that the student is interested, while also teaching about music theory, reading, and any music history that is relevant to the students' interests. For rock and pop music, I find that there are a wealth of songbooks available. For students interested in classical guitar, I like using Christopher Parkening's guitar method; it contains a great deal of useful information and diagrams, as well as a great selection of beginner pieces. I have a very personal teaching method to everyone. Depending on my student needs, I choose the book we go by. It can vary from Hal Leonard to Mel Bay or Jamie Aebersold. When I have classical guitar guys, I can pick between Andreas Segovia or Ted Tennant, etc. For jazz, for example, Frank Gambale or Scott Henderson, etc. Most important, I focus on fundamentals and discipline, making sure we have something new to explore every lesson if we can. I approach teaching as a creative coach. My goal is to build a strong foundation of knowledge and skill that the student then can use to empower their creativity. From the beginning we learn music theory and how scales work on guitar. What makes guitar special as an instrument. We learn exercises and chords to build finger strength and knowledge of the fretboard. But most importantly I open space for creative exploration. Read More
