Instruments: Drums
For my beginner students, I start by introducing them to the drum kit, providing a bit of history, and understanding their personal goals for learning drums. We focus on fundamentals, including drum notation, and by the end of the first lesson, most students can play a basic groove and fillgiving them the tools to start learning their favorite songs. Once the fundamentals are in place, we move on to learning songs and exploring different techniques, guided by the student's individual goals. Read More

I love being able to send students on their way for the day knowing that they put their best foot forward. Even if they did not come to a lesson prepared, being able to see growth in the small amount of time I'm with them is enough for me. I understand that every student progresses at their own pace, so I work with them and their parents to make sure that realistic goals are set and written down to hold the student, parent, and myself to this growth plan. Does music run in your family? Tell us a little about your musical family members.
My parents were both musicians. Dad played guitar, Mom played piano and guitar, and both sang. I would definitely say I was raised in a "musical family".
When did you decide to become a professional musician? Was it a gradual decision or was there a defining moment for you?
It was the same defining moment that actually happened twice! Once when I was in my early twenties, and again in my late thirties. I want to leave a little mystique here and say, if you want to know what it was just ask me and I'll be happy to tell you the story :-)
Do you use specific teaching methods or books? (Ex: Alfred, Bastion, Suzuki, Hal Leonard) Why did you choose them if you did?
Only Benny Greb's The Language of Drumming and The Art and Science of Groove. Mainly because my students really appreciate Benny's way of keeping things fun and simple.
What does a normal practice session look like for you?
To me there are 3 main elements that every practice session should included; 1) an intentional plan, 2) targeting a specific weak area or goal, 3) time for fun/play!
What is your favorite style/genre of music to play and why?
Progressive metal core. I love the creativity, precision and focus that is required to play the complex grooves and fills. Plus, it is my favorite style to listen to as well, which helps get through the difficulty.
What do you think is the hardest thing to master on your instrument?
4 way independence between limbs and understanding polyrhythmic or modulated patterns are what most drummers feel are the "bosses" of the drumming game. My self included! But with time, patience, and practice these bosses can be beat.
Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
Not exactly. I never really needed to be inspired to go into music ... it was all I ever really wanted to do. However, I did need to be inspired to STAY in music over the years. It can be a frustrating journey, as most would agree. I believe I never would have stuck with it had it not been for my teachers, coaches, friends, and peers who encouraged and supported me over they years.
When will I start to see results?
Most of my students start to see results within the first 30 days. This varies, of course, but is most dependent on the student's commitment to their practice time.
How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
I can't speak for all children, but for me I will never forget how badly I wanted to play the drums, even as a small child. I was willing to do anything ... even take violin and piano lessons first!
But I think there are also a few practical qualities that should be present prior to starting lessons: 1) Does he/she have at least 1 hour per week to dedicate to practice time?, 2) Does one or more of the parents have the time to support this practice each week?, 3) If he/she does not already have a drum set, is there +/- $350 in the budget to purchase an inexpensive electronic set?, 4) Does he/she have a genuine interest in music in general?
What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
Have a plan!
Ask yourself what you intend to practice before you even sit down at the drums, and stick to it.
Be patient and kind to yourself and have fun with the process.
1% improvement over 100 days is 100% improvement!
