I start beginners with the drum rudiments and chart reading. This gets them able to move their hands and feet for better coordination. After they have better coordination I introduce ear training which is playing along to their favorite songs. This teaches the student how toplay with a band. I first start off with hand posture: simply learning to hold the sticks correctly eludes even some adults. no matter how far a student has advanced, I always watch their hands. a good hand posture will help the students' sound, as well as help prevent injury. Both students I've taught have had entirely different goals, one just trying to learn drumset and the other wanting to learn a song for his talent show.
