I am a percussionist , drummer and beginning piano instruction. I have a music degree as well a master's degree in education. I have been teaching for the past 20 years with both school age student's as well as adults in individual and group settings. Did projects such as Music to My Ears project which won an international award. Music is a lifelong passion and I want to create an atmosphere that encourages creativity and a desire to seek out other musicians. For beginning students, I like to stress fundamentals with a twist. I encourage my students to play along with music they like to keep them interested in what they are practicing. As the student progresses, I will either compose a short solo or provide a short solo in which they can apply fundamentals to. For intermediate and more advanced students, I like to let them guide their own instruction. After coming to me with topics they'd like to learn more about, I will provide exercises, musical examples, and pieces to help them assimilate what they have learned with me, to real-world examples. A beginner private lesson will usually begin with wrist and finger exercises that establish technical foundation for exploring other rudiments. Secondly, teaching music notation. The four basic ways to divide the pulse and how they are notated. Third, 3 way co-ordination. Use of one foot and hands together. (Usually beginning and intermediate rock beats) Lastly, Application of all of the above to a musical situation. I am a long-time musician and educator; I have been doing both professionally since I was sixteen-years-old. My first student was my band director's son. My first gig was with a polka band. I now have a masters degree in ethnomusicology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a masters degree in music performance from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee along with a certificate of advanced study in chamber music. I try to keep lessons fun even though there's aspects that might be boring. So, I will switch from snare drum to drum set. Learning how to combine rudiments with drum set music such as jazz and rock is very beneficial. When my students are having trouble with a certain area, I do well with taking out that area and making a drill out of it. One of my specialties is that I will play the bass with students for various styles so they can have a hands on experience of the relationship of a rhythm section, phrasing, and timing. Read More
