When playing the actual drums, we focus heavily on rudimentary understanding of technique, grip, posture and fluidity while playing I have all students work on their 40 standard rudiments, understanding their history, application in both prior and contemporary forms of music, and how to further apply them. The rudiments are like the drummer's scale and are the consistent and perpetual language to speak drums. For students who are children I like to start to start learning rhythms through common children’s songs to show how easy music can be. Depending on the instrument, one of the many Hal Leonard books is always a good option. If they are a little older, I will use music that they like to teach how music theory and fundamental skills makes up all the musi they enjoy. After PipSqueak disbanded, I finished high-school exploring ska and punk music in the band PickUpChix, in which I did my first out-of-state tours, taking a van from Tulsa to play college shows as far as St. Louis. Outside of the band, I challenged myself to learn the rhythmic signatures among other cliques of friends, from the speedy double-kick footwork of death metal to the machine-rhythms of 90s hip-hop. In addition to drum set, I also teach djembe (West African), bodhran (Celtic), doumbek (Middle Eastern) and conga (Afro-Cuban). My favorite thing about teaching is watching students develop into creative musicians and finding their own voice. My playing and teaching has always been based in tradition, but not bound by it.
