I typically start beginner students on the Rubank Elementary Method books for saxophone, clarinet, or flute. These books are a great way to introduce the basic mechanics of the instrument, as well as reading music. I generally like to branch out from the method books as soon as possible, by supplementing the basic reading with other technical studies and pieces. I began teaching while in college and have now been teaching for 11 years.  My students have ranged in age from 3-60.  Since getting my Suzuki Flute certification in 2008,  I have found the Suzuki method a great way to start young beginners.  In addition to giving private lessons, I taught group flute classes for 3 years with the Harmony Program  My students are encouraged to participate in ensembles, competitions and recitals as having such goals is a great motivation for practice and musical growth. For beginning young students I prefer the Rubank Elementary Method for saxophone, clarinet and flute, and my own (unpublished) method for recorder. For older beginners, there are many books on the market. I'll work with what the student perfers. For more advanced students there are classic works such as Klose for clarinet or saxophone, solo works for competition or performance, or just for fun. I like to get to know my students before real in depth work can begin. Why are you interested in music? Why flute specifically? What other activites interest you? etc. I ask these questions so that analogies can be made to show how most things apply to all interests. Practice techniques in sports are similar to those in music for example. Knowing a student's personality outside of music also helps when setting goals, such as what to work on specifically in each lesson, what they are working towards in their own practice, and what future plans they have for music. I am developed an individual, highly effective teaching approach, combining basic music statements, free improvisation, improvisation on given changes and rhythm, sight-reading, music theory, discovering and incorporating music from different cultures and epochs.
