For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Essential Elements of Band by Hal Leonard and Tradition of Excellence by Bruce Pearson and Ryan Nowlin. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce more advanced method books such as J.B. Arban: A Complete Method, and various etude books as well as solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. Read More
Instruments: Piano
I began teaching piano to local children in the neighborhood as a teen-ager and have always found the experience to be interesting, rewarding challenging and enjoyable. I have experience teaching students of all ages (5 to 80), with a wide range of abilities and interests. I have prepared students who are interested to participate in recitals, festivals and to take exams such as those from the Toronto Conservatory of Music. Some students do not benefit from such experiences and may even find them detrimental. Read More

For about 5 years I taught at a program called "Be Natural Music" where all of the students were children and teens. We put together kid rock bands and had them play shows a few times a year at local venues and festivals. I was the resident drum teacher for that program until my very recent move to New York. In my time there I helped the program expand into a new bigger store front and almost doubled their clientele. Read More

For beginning students, I always start by learning the notes on the staff that corresponds with their specific instrument. Knowledge and confidence of this is crucial to the learning process. Next, I pick a method book to work through to learn the fundamentals. For trombone, I use Rubank's "Elementary Method." It is a great progressive studies that has great explanations, exercises, etudes, duets, mini-solos, scales studies, and more for young students. Read More
Instruments: Piano Trumpet Trombone Music
For all beginning students, I like to start out with buzzing exercises and embouchure technique. This is the most fundamental part of brass playing. Having a strong foundation in creating a sound consistently and efficiently makes learning everything else about brass playing infinitely easier. For this, I use the Arban method book and the "Buzzing Book" by James Thompson. Once these fundamentals start to become comfortable, I like to introduce some simple songs to apply the new techniques to. Read More

How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
If a child sings or taps on things when they hear music, or even when they do not, it could be an indication that they have some innate talent. If they are just going along with the crowd because their friend is in the band that is usually an indication that they are really not that interested in the music itself. Those situations are not necessarily bad either because while playing with other children they may recognize some connection to the music. Students who want private instruction need to find an instructor that they can easily understand and identify with.
When will I start to see results?
If a student practices every day for a week they will immediately see the difference. Unfortunately most students do not believe this. I see this at all levels. I have always made my practice sessions enjoyable. I really enjoy playing so I try to get my students excited about it as well. I like to practice first thing in the morning. This is the great thing about keyboards as opposed to pianos. Keyboards allow for much more privacy because they can be can be turned down or sent through headphones only. Practicing is not a social event so the more focused a students is when they practice the better.
Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
I had a very good private instructor in high school who was an older gentleman who had made a career for himself as a professional musician and instructor. Working on my own now in the same field, I can see why he was always happy. He really took an interest in his students and had a very successful practice. As a younger musician, I was more focused on performing. At this point, I get as much satisfaction out of private teaching. In private practice, I have the chance to really focus on the development of my students.
What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
Always go through things slowly and then in various tempos. It is important to play in a very relaxed state and to listen carefully to what you are playing. I use tuners extensively. Metronomes are good as well but they must be used properly. It makes no sense to set metronomes to meters that we cannot follow. Also, people often set metronomes improperly. Students may not feel meters in jazz when the metronome is set to 4/4 because jazz feels much more like 2/2. Music that is written in 6/8 may be played better if it was played with a feeling of two as well.
