My musical background began when I was just a child, learning how to play the guitar. My father, also a musician, told it to me straight when he said "learn how to sing and play the bass and you will never be out of a gig!". I took this advice and tried my best. I also went to the best teachers, too. I studied music, practiced along with my favorite songs, and plucked out chords and melodies until I moved on to music theory, sight-reading, and composition throughout my school years, eventually attending a Jazz specific playing studio to further my musical education. For beginning students, I typically start with a foundation of basic music theory and chord structure. Once the student is comfortable and this knowledge has become second nature, we progress to honing their own particular tastes in their first recital performance. Whatever the case, I always try to teach based on what the student is interested in even during the basics, to keep the lessons exciting and fun. This also gives the students a goal to look forward to and something to emulate without just copying someone else. Read More

I realize that each student is different, so I treat them as individuals. However, I do stress regular daily practice, even for short time periods. Regularity in practice is more important than long practice periods in my experience. I try to apply the three T's in my own playing and gradually incorporate these into my teaching, TASTE, TONE and TECHNIQUE. I enjoy seeing students progress because it reassures me that I understand the subject well, You have to know a subject 3 times as well if you teach it because a student will always ask a question you never thought of. I have learned many things from playing with other musicians either with a band or when just jamming with other guitarists. I have taught private lessons on and off for about 5 years to children and adults. Because music is an ongoing learning experience, many times I also become teacher when playing with less experienced musicians. Read More

Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs. Read More
