I am teaching the students chords, theory and structure while they are learning their favorite songs. Again, as stated above, my approach is based on the proven CAGED system, and stresses mastery of the basics, using the language and concepts of "classical", jazz and blues -in particular. I begin by establishing what students (already) know and don't know about music and their chosen instruments, making connections between pre-existing knowledge and concepts, and "filling in holes" -while teaching these basics. For Guitar I feel that it is best for everyone to start out learning classical and then branch out to other styles. However,  I , as a teacher want to teach everything if I can , while at the same time really focusing on what the students goals are in learning to play and what music gets them excited about playing.
