I have been teaching guitar for over 30 years and I enjoy teaching all ages. Besides guitar (electric, acoustic, nylon string), I also teach electric bass, music fundamentals, music composition, improvisation, songwriting, and much more. My guitar heroes include Andres Segovia, Wes Montgomery, George Benson, Pat Metheny, Joe Pass, John Scofield, B.B. King, Ritchie Blackmore, and Steve Vai. I lead a Jazz quartet in Las Vegas called the Shapiro Project. Read More

I began teaching at the age of 19 and within one year ended up teaching over 70 drummers weekly at four different locations in which I managed 2 of them. I then went on to open my own studio in 2007 to great success. Recently, desiring more musical adventures, I've decided to relocate to Las Vegas in search of more music opportunities in The Music Business. I have taught thousands of drummers and guitar players over the year and am looking forward to teaching thousands more! Read More

I love watching my students embrace what they've learned and grow. I am very intuitive and use this skill to serve each student independantly. It is so empowering to watch my students' confidence grow as they learn. I encourage my students to set realistic deadlines for performance, audition, and recording times. I help them find outlets for their skills and accompany them throughout the process. Recently I was overjoyed to find that one of my students booked a gig at his college, and is getting paid! After graduating from there in 2005, I moved to Nashville, TN and began touring the country with local artists. Most of my touring days were as lead guitarist, although sometimes I did take on a more rhythm & acoustic role. It was also in Nashville that I began to learn and love Fingerpicking guitar in the style of Chet Atkins. My main focus at this time in my personal playing is split between fingerpicking and jazz. Again, as stated above, my approach is based on the proven CAGED system, and stresses mastery of the basics, using the language and concepts of "classical", jazz and blues -in particular. I begin by establishing what students (already) know and don't know about music and their chosen instruments, making connections between pre-existing knowledge and concepts, and "filling in holes" -while teaching these basics. Then, as soon as students are able, we begin applying this knowledge -these concepts- to their preferred musical mediums -in addition to "branching out" to apply basic knowledge/concepts/skills to increasingly more advanced applications. My teaching experience started back in High School. I was in a music class and every month I would get to teach kids how to play the ukulele. In college, I started teaching private music lessons and worked at a local music shop and I would teach people how to play songs before purchasing an instrument. I taught students of all ages ranging from a 3 year old little girl to a 68 year old retired mailman. Read More

What do you think is the hardest thing to master on your instrument?
I feel as though everyone has a creative block every now and then it’s something that every musician deals with. I can definitely say sometimes I go through slumps where I’m having a musical wall and meet a breakthrough but that just pushes me to further my plane and think of new concepts and ideas to take it to the next level. Mastery and creative blocks are one of the hardest things to conquer when playing in any instrument but it’s also something that I find can be mastered over time with hard work and diligence.

Have any of your students won awards or been selected for special honors? How have they succeeded?
Several of my students have received fans from their own music because of my lessons and musical training which is helped improve their own bands and musical endeavors. I can’t say they’re winning Grammys but they are definitely making moves in the music world and improving their lives which is the greatest reward to me in my opinion. Every student should have a special goal that they are trying to achieve with my lesson should be doing to help them. I am proud of my students and what they have achieved through my lessons.

What musical accomplishments are you most proud of?
I’m definitely proud of all of the live shows and traveling I have achieved with playing guitar. Most of all I’m definitely proud of my endorsements and instruments I received from playing all these years. To be able to travel the world meet new places try new foods and experience new things in life are the greatest accomplishments to me. There’s nothing more for filling in life than that I can definitely say that it has made everyone in my family proud and above all myself which is most important.

Why did you choose your primary instrument?
I’ve always had a huge fascination with playing Atari ever since I was younger. The things you were able to create with plain is something that other instruments didn’t seem appealing to me. The sound and the playability of the instrument is what really stuck out to me playing guitar something that I always found inspiring to do and still feel that way to this day whenever I pick it up. Like they always say, everyone secretly wants to play guitar whether they admit it or not! Guitar will always be my passion.

5 Guitar Classics to Learn Today

...behind this amazing song has to do with the controversy over whether songwriter Kurt Cobain wrote the riff himself or was unintentionally inspired by a song called “Eighties” by the band Killing Joke. If you listen to both tracks, the similarities are pretty astounding. Regardless, it’s still one of those guitar classics that sticks with you.   For this song, we’ve included the main guitar riff as well as the basic chord structure.   [Intro] Em D Em D Em D Em D [Verse 1] Em D Em Come as you are, as you were D Em As I want you... Basic Music Theory: A Guide to Keys, Chords, Progressions, and More!

...can to check things out on the smallest scale possible before you can fully comprehend the bigger picture of how it works. In basic music theory, the furthest we can zoom in is down to the individual pitches we hear in music and in the world around us. Let’s call these notes. Music theory gives each pitch its own name by measuring how many times it vibrates in a second. For example, on a keyboard the A above the middle C is known as “A440” because the pitch vibrates 440 times in a second (the middle C is the C note found ... Read More

...was never used in a James Bond film.     “Pumped Up Kicks”/ Foster The People/ 2011       “Pumped Up Kicks” is a dark, troubled song dressed up as a shiny pop masterpiece. The song was written by Mark Foster, who formerly worked as a commercial jingle writer, in just five hours in 2009 shortly after forming Foster The People. In an interview, Foster said the day of the recording that he nearly opted in to going to the beach rather than recording the song. The song earned the group a major record deal and wide acclaim. The lyrics of the song ... Read More

...to bounce. Because you want the sound to either disperse or be absorbed, wall, ceiling, and floor materials are important. For a surface to absorb as much of the sound as possible—ultimately converting it to heat—it is ideal to use materials with a large surface area. Carpet will absorb more sound than wood flooring, because the sound waves will vibrate in the nooks and crannies of the surface. Curtains, tapestries, and other cloth-based wall coverings will help to dissipate and absorb sound better than the smooth surface of a wall.   The furniture inside the space will influence the paths of the sound ... Elliot Mason of Wynton Marsalis’ band at Lincoln Center is well known for his use of the bass trumpet, and Rashawn Ross has recorded with the bass trumpet as well. Ross is known for his studio ...
