I like to use a combination of methods and method books. For a beginning band student I would use Standard Of Excellence of Essential Elements. For guitar students I like to use a combination of methods, depending on the student. I like to use the Old Town School's book for their first songs or Essential Elements for guitar. I like to use a method for guitar that emphasizes reading notes instead of just tabs, and also emphasizes rest stroke and free stroke. Read More

Again, as stated above, my approach is based on the proven CAGED system, and stresses mastery of the basics, using the language and concepts of "classical", jazz and blues -in particular. I begin by establishing what students (already) know and don't know about music and their chosen instruments, making connections between pre-existing knowledge and concepts, and "filling in holes" -while teaching these basics. Then, as soon as students are able, we begin applying this knowledge -these concepts- to their preferred musical mediums -in addition to "branching out" to apply basic knowledge/concepts/skills to increasingly more advanced applications. For Guitar I feel that it is best for everyone to start out learning classical and then branch out to other styles. However, I , as a teacher want to teach everything if I can , while at the same time really focusing on what the students goals are in learning to play and what music gets them excited about playing. So I will use standard guitar teaching materials such as studies from Sor and Giuliani , or Segovia scales , or certain method books by Hal Leonard , Scott Tennant etc...but each student is different and my approach is focused on tailoring everything to each student specifically. With each student it varies. I usually start by getting to know the student in finding out the key points that they are trying to achieve and work on. After that I go in depth by showing them hands on techniques and styles that will help improve their plane as well as music theory concepts that will improve their writing abilities and song structure style. Each student is different in their own way of learning so I vary my teaching based off of that. Read More

For beginners I usually start with Mel Bay Guitar Method, Book One or Hal Leonard Guitar Method One. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. Read More

I like to get my students to a level at which they can actually make/play music first, using their current favorite genre of music. The sooner they can make sounds on the instrument that resemble something close to "music," the sooner they'll fall in love with the instrument. Once they have reached that level, we then dive in to music theory, guitar specific theory, sight-reading, and all of the other necessary areas of music that tend to deter most potential students.
