On the first lesson, I like to help students create realistic, long-term goals for themselves. Then the student and I develop a plan to help them achieve them. Learning tools include method books, recordings of the lesson, and playing along with me. I also make solo pieces available, and encourage the student to participate in local recitals. My lessons generally follow the county public school's music curriculum and include rhythmic and melodic dictation, ear training, sightreading, theory and song form. Read More

I'm a self-taught guitarist/bassist who has been playing for over ten years. I have worked at a music recording studio for the past two and a half years with artists of all genres. I've been playing in bands since I was fifteen, lots of metal and rock, but some new wave, post-rock, and ambient groups as well. I've had plenty of live performance experience, playing around Baltimore and Annapolis at venues such as the Ottobar, The Recher, The House of Rock, The Sidebar, The Metropolitan, and Union Jacks, among others. I recommend that anyone starting to learn music begins at the age of ten simply because of finger strength and focus. I also try to ensure that they practice at a minimum of 20 to 30 minutes a day between lessons to help them reach their full potential. I stand by the "practice makes perfect" saying wholeheartedly. I give small amounts of homework after every lesson and try to create a fun environment for learning that is stress-free. Read More

My teaching experience dates back to High School as I began teaching part time. I continued teaching thru collage and the Airforce Band. After College I played full-time for many years. I began teaching full-time in 1995. I started my home studio in 2014. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument. My approach actively tries to preserve and cultivate the original passions of music that lead students to seek lessons in the first place. The material we focus on (which also serves as the vehicle for learning about music-in-general) will be determined foremost by the students' interests. Students who are especially conducive or committed to book-learning and linear structure will be accommodated as well, and we will be largely centering Mark Levine's model. Read More

I have several tools that I use to get students playing music. One of my favorite tools is the Music Flashcards made by Bastien. Rather than teaching notes using an acronym like "every good boy deserves fudge" to teach notes, I use landmarks which get students to see the relationship between notes and allow them to read music with fluidity and ease. I pair these flashcards with Music Tree book 1 and feel that they compliment each other very well. Read More

Mygoal is to develop a friendly and encouraging relationship with each student in an effort to motivate them to do their very best. It takes discipline to learn to play an instrument but the journey to consistent improvement should be enjoyable. I am experienced in a wide range of musical styles and I try to help students pursue their individual musical interests. Lessons in music theory, technique, sight reading and musical performance are taught to each student. Read More
