I typically begin with rhythm. The best melodies would not be worth anything if they aren't played with rhythm. After a student gains basic familiarity with their instrument I use a metronome (a musician's best and worst friend. Instead of playing traditional exercises, I teach students their favorite songs and techniques typical of their favorite genres. With my understanding of theory I try to incorporate a tiny bit of theory into every lesson to make an initially intimidating subject more accessible. Read More

Ive been teaching private saxophone lessons for 3 years. Ive developed a simple method to customize each students practice routine. Students are all different and have different strengths and weaknesses. Its very important for musicians to be honest with themselves about their struggles in music. I help direct their focus and plan a written practice log in their own notebook. Writing down goals and achievements weekly helps motivate students and keeps them practicing. Read More

I like to divide my lessons into three different parts the first part would be a warm up in wish we get ready all the necessary muscles involved in playing the instrument with exercises that would develop dexterity and coordination simultaneously, the second part of how to listen is based on learning a basic piece of music that is guaranteed to develop the basic skills to perform something that they are interested on, on the cliff part of the lesson is to choose a song that the student wants to learn and analyze it apply what we learned by playing the basic peace and the warm ups. I tailor my methods according to the specific needs of each student. I feel that it is my job to assess the needs and learning style of a student and adapt what I offer to them and do so by deeply listening and observing what a student can do when we first meet to what I can determine are their interests and goals and what styles or approaches most fire up their creative excitement. I've primarily had private guitar students in the past, truthfully nobody has ever been consistent. They were all generally beginners but were at various stages. I hope they're still out they're playing guitar! Prior to becoming a full time musician I taught music lessons with the Boys and Girls Club of Austin, from October 2012- Jan 2014. After this I left my position to tour heavily. Most of the "teaching" I do these days is more like "trading" licks with other guitarists, or teaching freebie licks to beginners in jam situations. My teaching experience dates back to the spring of 2004, shortly after graduating from college. Early on in my career as an instructor, I found the best overall approach to teaching was to encourage consistent practice, coupled with a strong emphasis on good technique and developing good habits. Maintaining a consistent lesson schedule as well as continuity between lessons is critical. My experience with teaching has also taught me that as an instructor, you can't always be a disciplinarian. In high school, I was blessed with an incredibly patient, thorough and talented choir teacher. He taught me the fundamental building blocks of musicianship as I understand it best. To this day, I use the key concepts I learned from him in my lessons. 1) Rhythm is the most important element of music. 2) Understanding the importance of persistence, practice, and patience with the instrument. 3) You can manufacture energy and put it into your music.
