My teaching style is to observe each students background. I tend to try approach each student with their own "Language" to make them more easily to understand music theory concepts. Just like what I mentioned before, pure music theory is vague to most people; so I do make examples of implied meaning from other field to make the student catch the logic in their own field knowledge. I usually balances the time by working first on fundamental/technical aspects of the instrument: intonation, articulation, rhythm, and tone; followed by study of the particular student's chosen repertoire, whether it be jazz standards, rock/pop/blues tunes, classical literature or etudes. I believe in teaching students to organize their practice time wisely, isolating specific issues on the instrument. I like to divide my lessons into three different parts the first part would be a warm up in wish we get ready all the necessary muscles involved in playing the instrument with exercises that would develop dexterity and coordination simultaneously, the second part of how to listen is based on learning a basic piece of music that is guaranteed to develop the basic skills to perform something that they are interested on, on the cliff part of the lesson is to choose a song that the student wants to learn and analyze it apply what we learned by playing the basic peace and the warm ups. For beginning drum set students, the program I recommend is starting with Drum Set Essentials by Peter Erskine. As skills in rudiments and basic patterns develop, I go on to materials such as Syncopation by Ted Reed (reading,coordination,technique), and Stick Control by George Lawrence Stone (technique). For beginning students who have no experience on their instrument, I usually spend a fair chunk of time working on basic technique using books like the Essential Elements series or Greg Horne's similar books for folk instruments. I usually combine the book material with other songs/pieces relevant to each student's interests.
