I've been playing music for most of my life. Growing up my whole family would all gather around the piano while my father played. Seeing how inspiring and influential music could be at a young age helped me to develop a passion for it. I am very grateful to share my passion with others through teaching. I create custom lesson plans depending on each student's musical background, stylistic preference, as well as age. For children I usually like to teach out of Hal Leonard's Guitar Method 1 and occasionally include songs they like/know as a reward for good work. For adults, it varies depending on their experience level and interests. When I teach, I try to teach not only how to physically play certain parts, but also how to think about music-- how the guitar player arrived playing that, why it works, and how to adopt similar things into one's own playing. Most of my education and experience working with students comes from a background of counseling and social sciences. I try to approach teaching music and guitar in a similar way to how I would approach any other kind of teaching, and attribute my unique background and skillset to make my lessons effective for a diverse range of students. Sometimes it may take me more time than is provided within one lesson to, for example, listen to and figure out how to play and teach a song that is new to me to a student is interested in learning it, so patience is appreciated. I've had to teach four to six instrument parts to the band mates for a single song. Stopping a jam to nail down a part can be frustrating and slow the momentum of a jam session, but I've always felt it is imperative to keep everyone knowledgeable and in pocket. So in my music teaching experience, I've learned to keep a positive and patient vibe.
