I taught the section every year for about 12 years before being hired as a full-time teacher and becoming the assistant director of the band. If the student is having a hard time finding interest in the instrument through disciplines, I start them off with various ear training games to get them to make connections between the music inside of them and the guitar or bass as a constructive outlet. This generally creates a foundation that has room for disciplines.
