Instruments: Piano
For the youngest students, I begin with Music for Little Mozarts or John Thompson method books and a lot of music related games. Flash cards assist with retention of musical terms and notes. I also provide worksheets to help reinforce what the students learn. Later I add exercises to help with rhythm and agility. Older students I begin with John Thompson method books or Bastien method books, theory books, and exercises. Read More
Instruments: Piano Violin Viola
I have been teaching music lessons since 1989 as soon as I graduate high school. My deep love and understanding of music helps inspire and empower students to expand their musical voice. My teaching methods depend on the age and ability of the student. From younger students and beginners to older or more advanced students. For violin, I use my own tailored curriculum. I teaches basic scales, essential techniques to all levels, and various pieces of music depending on the studentxe2x80x99s needs. Read More
Instruments: Piano Voice
I've been teaching piano and voice in the Northern Virginia area for over fifteen years. I have worked at studios such as Jordan Kitts Music and Music and Arts, and have done in-home lessons at students homes, which I still do now. My students range from beginners to intermediate level players, and my approach combines popular music with classical, jazz and traditional styles. Of course, in the beginning they learn to play simple songs that they are familiar with like Frere Jacques, Old McDonald, Jingle Bells and so on. Read More

I started saxophone when I was in 6th grade, but I would say my musical journey truly began when I reached high school. I found a teacher in my hometown of York Pennsylvania who's values perfectly aligned with mine. His methods are still a part of my every-day routine and I have made it my mission to share them with everyone I can. In 2014 I moved to North Carolina to pursue my bachelors in Jazz Performance. What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
If you play something wrong, don’t go back and play it only once wrong. You need to play it a few times correctly. If you play it once wrong and once right, when you go back and do it again, you will most likely play it wrong again. Sometimes it is helpful to practice the tricky sections first a few times before doing a run through of the whole piece.
Young students should commit to practicing 15-20 minutes at least 5 days per week. Older students should commit to practicing 30+ minutes at least 5 days per week.
How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
Violins come in many sizes and so this is a good instrument for young children to play! If your child can follow simple instructions, has good behavior, and can commit to regular practice, your child is ready for lessons. Violin and piano can be started at a very young age. The children do not need to know how to read or have any prior music experience. Students who do not yet know how to read will need a parent to help with practice sessions, but older students should be able to practice without assistance. I would suggest waiting until about age 8 to start the viola.
When will I start to see results?
This really depends on what you consider “results!” Students will learn how to play some music on their instrument in the very first lesson. Progress depends on many factors. Older students tend to progress faster than younger students. Natural ability plays a role in instrument proficiency as well. Even more than natural ability, however, is how much time and focus the students spend on their instrument during the week. I have had students with not much ability be really successful through hard work and diligence!
Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
My mom actually inspired me the most to go into music. She was (and still is) a piano teacher. Music was the norm in my childhood home. I began to have an interest in violin at age 2. My mom started teaching me piano at age 4 and then allowed me to take violin lessons at age 7. She taught me the importance of regular practice, making sure that it was done even when I would rather be doing something else. As I got into my teenage years, she provided me the opportunity to do some student teaching. I helped with group piano classes and taught some private violin lessons for a reduced rate.
