Later, as a violist, I was a founding member of the Youth Symphony Orchestra "Raimundo Pereira" (One of the Orchestras of "The Sistema") in Venezuela. I studied lyrical and popular song with Masters William Alvarado and Inés Feo La Cruz. I always work with a method book, and have a range of fun books to choose from from beginner to advanced for guitar and piano. I use a separate sheet of paper as a log of each day's lesson at the end to show what we worked on, what to practice, and other notes or positive remarks ( ‘great job’, etc.) With older students I encourage exploring your own musical tastes and learning from the artists you like. For beginners, especially younger players, I believe it is best to start with simple pieces to build security. For this I usually try to pick fairly well known melodies that the student likely has in their head already, such as 'Ode to Joy' or 'Jingle-Bells'. By starting with tunes the student already knows, I believe that the learning process becomes much more intuitive. For teens/adults I encourage the student to find out what the students interests/goals are and adjust my lesson accordingly. Read More
