My style is to create a stress-free environment. Making music is fun and fulfilling and I make sure the student gets to experience that for themselves. I am very flexible with my approach. If I notice a student hates to read music, then we will practice learning by ear, or vice versa. If I notice my student is writing his or her own songs, then I foster that by teaching composition. Its amazing to watch my students fall in love with their instrument and gain confidence and joy from learning to play. Everyone is different and will need to go at their own pace. My job is more of a "coach" - setting up structures and practices to help you succeed but not doing the work for you! I will help fuel your desire to grow as a musician and encourage you to progress at your own pace while celebrating each and every success along the way while tailoring my instruction based on my students needs and goals. Are you interested in learning to play the guitar and want an enjoyable experience that will get you playing songs quickly and with a lot of joy? As a self taught player I have struggled with the how/when/what to practice and finally decided why I was learning to play the guitar. My personal goal is to always improve, but the main reason I play the guitar is for the sheer enjoyment of it as well as producing sounds/songs that I find enjoyable (and if listeners enjoy it that is just a bonus). As a guitar teacher, I like to start with getting the student accustomed with each string, including how to tune a guitar and how to play different notes on each string. Next, I start teaching chords by starting with E minor and then moving as little as possible with the fingers so the student can understand the relation between certain chords. For voice, I start with posture and breath support and work on vocal techniques before we even start with singing songs. Read More

With beginning students, I will start with the basics and encourage them to buy A Modern Method for Guitar by William Leavitt. Starting out, students will work on chords and scales. We will also work on building a repetoire of songs for the student to work on perform. Intermediate students will work on the fundamentals of theory, triads, beginner 7th chords, and improvasation. Advanced students will work on expanding their knowledge of theory, inversions, technique building, chord tensions and substitution. Read More

I first began teaching privately at age 15 when a wealth of younger and older students at my high school took interest in learning how to play the guitar, and write songs. I believe the only way to truly improve is to practice, and to enjoy the process. Learning music is like learning a language, so it is a process of repetition and study. That, however, does not mean it cant be fun! Read More
