I use several different method books for teaching. The books I typically use are Alfred's Basic Guitar, Mel Bay's beginner books as well as Hal Leonard's melody books. I teach beginner students the basics of how to properly hold their guitar, hand and finger placement, and simple note reading and chords. Some time in 2006 I was asked by the director to become his assistant and began taking on groups of my own. In 2007 I also joined ECMM as a sales associate and apprentice luthier in their shop, selling and working on guitars and other instruments. It was unfortunate that ECMM closed in 2009 after 33 years. Working at East Coast was a great experience for me and something I will always cherish. What I loved most about the ROA program was that as I transitioned from a student to a teacher, I adopted the same teaching style as my mentor: let the students choose what they want to learn and help them to learn and perfect it. The instructor should be able to identify his/her students "comfort level" when creating/implementing an instruction program for a student. If a student feels as if he is being pushed along at a pace not suited for his learning style the student may not gain maximum benefit from the instruction. In 2011 I started to take teaching more seriously and had several students over Skype and in my own studio. I am currently an educator at a music school in Litchfield County and teach in-home private lessons throughout the Hartford area.
