For beginning students who are children, I typically begin by introducing them to the various parts of the instrument, along with the basics of technique and position. New notes and concepts would be introduced through learning familiar songs and pieces. All parents are encouraged to attend their child's violin lessons so that they can aid practice sessions. For adults, I try to find out what the student is most interested in learning, and devise a plan with the student accordingly in order to keep the lessons engaging and fun. Read More

Piano: For adults, I mix many methods together to see which one works well with the student, and make sure to know which songs they really want to play so I write it down for them according to tp their level. For young kids usually, I go between piano adventures and TRC, also I write for them the songs that they really want to play. So I typically take a very relaxed approach during the first few lessons, to get the student to loosen up and feel comfortable, all while observing the student in order to assess their strengths and weaknesses, and figure out what types of music the student is interested in making. Then I can tailor their future lessons so that their goal of playing that type of music is never forgotten, or overshadowed by lots of "exercises" they feel aren't fun. Read More

Method books vary by instrument and student; there is a wonderful, vast library of methods available, and I like to base my selections on many factors unique to every student. Age, experience level, musical understanding, etc. all inform my choice of course of study. I am a former Suzuki student--I began at age 3.5 with my mom as my teacher--so I believe that Suzuki is an incredible method for teaching young string players. The aural memory I attained by learning this way still continues to benefit me in my career each and every day! I've been teaching since graduating high school part but I've been teaching consistently for the last 5 years since graduating college. I am always exploring different genres,techniques, and ideas of what music is, which has made me a good all around musician. I am a big fan of making things fun because music to me is fun to play.
