I taught students ages 5-7 in the Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls' Jumpstart program, and ages 8-18 in Willie Mae's Girls Rock Program. At Willie Mae, I taught mostly group lessons. I have also taught group theory and fundamentals lessons at the Brooklyn Music School in Fort Greene, where I work currently as a counselor. For beginning students we usually start with sitting at 2 drum sets and learning to hold the sticks. It's then about trying to get the sticks to strike the drum and practice getting a nice sound on the instrument. Even at a young age, it's important to help the students to think about tone and how we are creating sound on these instruments.
