This is my basic approach for getting a new student started at the drums.  I like to start students out on the practice pad at first.  This gives them a chance to focus on learning good technique and understanding basic musical notation.  Starting out on a huge drumset is not only a little overwhelming, but there is only so much they can accomplish until they grasp the basics.  Below is a general list of the things that will be covered in the first month or so for a newcomer to the drums. -Proper technical approach (grip, hand/ arm position, stroke) -Musical notation, note values (basic reading- quarter notes, eighth notes, triplets, rests, etc.) -Rolls (double stroke, single stroke, press) -Rudiments (flams, paradiddles, etc.) -Accents -Snare Drum Solos Various instructional books are used including- “Syncopation”, “Stick Control”, “Modern Reading, text in 4/4”, “Wilcoxin Book”, and more. For older more advanced beginner and advanced students, I focus on a variety music which will motivate them to practice, learn and have fun. For everyone, I try to be calming, supportive, and as fun as possible; there are differences for various ages. With very young students, it's important to be as supportive as possible; especially when learning new things that can often be frustrating. I spend the 2017-2018 academic year working full time at Charles W. Henry Elementary School in Mt. Airy, PA. I therefore have a lot of experience working with children grades K-8. I have also been teaching privately for 2 years. With younger students in particular, I like to focus on a combination of instrumental performance, music history/appreciation, as well as music theory.
