I initially have a student work on a series of simple fingering exercises. This gets the student familiar with the feel of the instrument and helps to reinforce how the left and right hands work together when performing. Another benefit is that it helps the student to build speed/dexterity when playing. Nothing is more rewarding in my teaching than watching a student enjoy making progress and exceeding the expectations that others have set for them. My favorite moment in the teaching process is witnessing the excitement of a student who has just performed above and beyond even the goals and epectations I had set for them to accomplish in a period of time. A sense of accomplishment and progress needs to be maintained with mostly positive feedback and encouragement to strive to be better.
