Instruments: Piano
For children or beginner students I start out with the simple basics of the piano and get them familiar with the piano keys.I then introduce theory to them slowly and learn how to read music. I teach composition, theory, performance, ear training, reading and much more. If the student has already had lessons prior I assess what level they are at and then I come up with a lesson plan to teach with. Read More

Learning about music involves so much more than technique or scales, but also relies so much on their emotions and mindset. I want to prioritize their own independence within these lessons in regards to choosing their own repertoire or experimenting with their own compositional style so that they can embrace how liberating and fun learning about music and being creative can be, rather than seeing it as a chore! I also want to make sure that their musical journey is built with the right mindset - a lot of the time there is unnecessary toxic, competitive energy within other musicians which defeats the whole purpose of inspirational collaboration that can come from playing music with others. I'm all about encouragement and accountability. I tailor each lesson to the student, based on their goals and what they need to succeed. My students want to work hard because I work hard for them. Music is not a chore, it's a passion, and that is an important distinction that is very clear in my method. The basis of my teaching style for all students is vocal health and artistic exploration. I have a 20+ years experience in teaching piano, and a classroom Music teacher as well. Music Theory is my forte and started to develop reading skills and teaching with the aid of technology. I started playing piano in our church when I was in 6th grade, that's when I realized that Everyone has a talent of something they can contribute to the world, It is also important to know that we are all given different talents to use at different times. Instruments: Voice
My lessons typically start with stretching and breathing exercises and then transition to vocal exercises. The vocal exercises serve to strengthen their technique and solidify skills needed to tackle their song. I always ask my students what kind of music they are interested in and find songs to work on that will help strengthen their voice, but also connect with their soul. We will "workshop" their song to work on vocal production as well as fine tune their presentation and performance. Read More

For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Faber's Piano Adventures or Suzuki's Piano School, however I am open to other books. Faber focuses more on written and piano practice whereas Suzuki focuses on auditory learning and piano practice. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. Read More

I always say that rhythm is more important than the notes. Play the right rhythm and the notes will come instead of playing every right note while sacrificing rhythm. I encourage students to make their mistakes loud, proud, and in rhythm so everyone has a better idea of what needs to be worked on most. I also emphasize isolating parts to practice and working backwards. Example: play the last two bars of the song until comfortable with it, now play the last 4 bars, last 6, last 8...etc., whole song.
