I have been teaching voice for almost 20 years now. I have found that it doesn't matter the age if you have a love of singing then you can learn. I have had many students and it's so much fun to watch them learn and grow and find out that everyone has a voice and is capable of singing. My approach to teaching really varies depending on the students specific needs. For absolute beginners, I can tend to follow a more concrete progression, but depending on who the student is, and what they're level of passion may be for learning something specific, the lesson may be highly specific. If the student is interested, I personally like to give them an understanding of some of the theory as they go along, even if they are a beginner because I believe it helps them to see the bigger picture. Some do best learning by demonstration, others by reading sheet music, others through discussion and application. For younger students, I believe learning basic music theory is a great foundation for understanding music and will overall help your musicality. Scales and warmups are extremely important in a new student as well, as they develop your voice and breathing in order to sing more challenging material in the future. I have been teaching privately and in group classes for the past 6 years. This past summer, I taught a chamber orchestra of kids ages 6-12 in Narni, Italy. It was a truly rewarding experience. Most of my experience is with teaching private lessons. I am open to teaching all ages and levels. For violin, I teach mostly beginners and intermediate students, but can teach all levels for viola.
