As we work through the scales I'll have the student read short songs and excerpts from Hal Leonard's "Piano Adventures Performance" book. As the student grasps the fundamentals I will then assign level appropriate solo pieces for them to perform. Beginner drum students will follow the same model by starting with rudiments and the different pieces of the drum set/djembe. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements and incorporate Position Pieces for Cello by Rick Mooney as they progress to higher levels of difficulty. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance.
