Instruments: Saxophone

My teaching experience began when I started giving lessons in my freshman year of college 10 years ago. I was part of the school of music's community teaching program, where I taught lessons to mostly children. Since that time I have taught in-home lessons and home studio lessons. When I teach, I try to help students discover their passion for the instrument. I structure lessons in a way that helps students enjoy what they do. Read More

While in the AF, though, I've been blessed to have several part-time college teaching jobs. I taught saxophone, sax quartet and clarinet for five years at Adams State University in Colorado. For five of my six years in Illinois, I taught saxophone and sax quartet at McKendree University. I've always maintained a private studio of students ranging in age from 8 to 80+. I love teaching all skill levels: beginner, intermediate, and advanced students all give me unique challenges as a teacher that I always welcome. Read More

Instruments: Piano

For beginning young students, I typically start with Music Tree or Piano Adventure. Once the student has progressed, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire. For adult students, after seeing their level of playing, I would find the style of music that they are interested in. If students are interested in learning specific music pieces, we can focus on that until feeling comfortable and confident then move on to similar style so we can keep that interest going then move on to more advanced pieces. Initially, the traditional school of classical Spanish and Cuban guitar has as a methodology to begin the process of construction of future instrument teachers, where students from 2 years of career should learn the teaching method and start the search for their Own students. This is how my music teaching process begins. Time later I started to give chair of classical guitar in the conservatory of music Pedro Morales Pino, in the city of Cartago - Colombia. Read More

For beginning students who are children, I use a variety of methods, including Hal Leonard's Children's Guitar Method, Suzuki methodologies (I am NOT a Suzuki-certified teacher), and materials I've developed over my 25 year teaching career. I emphasize basic technique for the left and right hands, and I make sure they learn the basics of reading music. For older students (middle school-age to adult), I tend to let the student lead. Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
