Patience, as well as my depth of experience, are characteristics of my teaching style. I'm as happy as the student is when he or she achieves an understanding of a musical concept or mastery of a physical technique on the instrument. The achievement will reinforce more effort toward the next step, but it must be "relaxed" effort. "Slowly but surely" is my motto as the challenges become greater and the success sweeter. Read More

I feel that if a student is just banging away at notes without getting the big picture of how everything works it can be frustrating and fruitless. I like to teach as we play a song. I think you are able to benefit by using the theory and techniques as the song progresses. I can teach out of a book if the student/parent would prefer. I do customize songs to the age and interests of the student. Read More

I graduated with my Bachelor’s in Music Education from Wartburg College in 2004. I then moved to Wisconsin where I was a middle school and high school choir director for seven years. There I taught chorus, private and group voice lessons, piano class, general music class, and also organized the middle school talent show. I later moved on to Hawaii where I taught private voice and piano lessons through Musikgarten Hawaii. Read More

I'm an artist and musician who is eager to teach beginners and intermediate players how to play the piano. I've been playing piano for over 17 years and have a Bachelor of Music degree from Belmont University in commercial piano performance. I'm well-versed in the styles of classical, jazz, rock, country, blues, and new-age/ambient music, and have experience playing in jazz bands, musical pit orchestras, and playing my own solo repertoire. I am a creative and encouraging instructor who loves helping students discover their own abilities. I have been playing drums for over 13 years, and have been in numerous projects in a range of genres in recent years, even including some contributions to a film score. Growing up in a family of musicians and teachers, a love for music and music education is baked into my heart. I have developed a unique style of drumming that is well adapted to many styles of music, and is based around creating smaller phrases to support larger ideas in the song. Read More

I strongly believe in learning from my students, and that music lessons are about sharing, and exchanging ideas. I also understand that students at the beginning of their musical journey may need more of a guiding hand than others further along. For piano students I use the Neil A. Kjos Piano Library method books. I am flexible and I can tailor my lessons to what the student is interested in learning. Read More

I tend to emphasize piano theory and lots and LOTS of practice for my methods I link to success. Piano theory and understanding the circle of fifths and chords with their relative minors, etcetera are extremely important as building blocks to a good knowledge base, especially if you'll be composing. I find that learning how to read sheet music takes a while, but is extremely essential in order to behind fluent in practice. Read More
