My teaching style is that I set a plan for every student I have. For instance, I will apply reading notes, but that will not work for each student, each student is different and would prefer another style of teaching. That's when i would test their own level of memorization. I would teach each student chord structure of memorizing maximum 2 chords. Once each student fully has the 2 chords memorized I would hand them a sheet of paper, giving them instructions on top of the paper, stating Now that you have mastered memorizing the chords I would want you to come up with a small melody by building a staff with a time signature and writing the notes on the sheet of paper. Example, I would take a small little line or phrase of music, I would teach them the construct of rhythm, time, tempo, the style, articulation, and then apply the exercises or fudamentals around learning how to play the line properly. Andrew was voted the 2004 Pioneer Marching Percussion Member of the Year by the educational and administrative staff. He has taught and had original compositions and arrangements played by high school drum lines in Illinois, Alabama, and Nevada; including collegiate ensemles such as the UNLV Star of Nevada Drum Line, the UWA Catalyst Drum Line, and the Troy University Sound of the South Drum Line. Andrew was most recently a Percussion Instructor for the Pioneer Drum and Bugle Corps from Milwaukee, Wisconsin where he primarily instructed the Tenor Line, but also ran many rehearsals and worked with all the percussive sections.
