The beginning students always start in a book, which is usually John Thompson's "Teaching Little Fingers to Play", or for the older students, "Bastien's Book for Older Beginners."  As they move along, the students often have an idea of what they want to play, and often bring me music, especially the adolescents.  I can determine more upon working with the student over time. I am a versatile music teacher. As an undergraduate at Ithaca College, I learned each band and orchestra instrument from the college instructor. For example, I learned to play the oboe from the oboe professor. We had to make our own reeds and use them to play our final exam. I try to keep the student as interested as possible,some have shorter attention spans then others and for them maybe i will do 30 minutes instead of 45 minutes. others who are really into it and do not want to leave i may teach them for an hour and that often turns into 2 or 3 hours of just jamming and having fun at no extra cost because without students a maestro is nothing but a musician playing music. i love to play along with students so they are more prepared when they go out and make music with others musicians and they can stay in time with a drummer more easily. I start by gathering information about a student's goals and inspirations, and prior knowledge/experience. From there, we develop a plan for warmup exercises, technical exercises, literature, sight-reading, ear-training and listening excerpts to be studied. I determine whether the student needs to begin learning primarily by ear or using some kind of written notation. We find a schedule that will work with both of us. Most students have a regular weekly time, but some students need a variable time due to their individual schedule so we work that out in advance. Read More
