One of my beliefs as a teacher of the saxophone, is that it is equally as important to foster musicality as it is master technique. Greetings, I'm a recent college graduate who studied secondary education (grades 7-12). I'm a lifelong musician, and have been playing guitar and alto saxophone for about 20 years. I've also been playing piano for about 10 years. I studied music theory, composition, and musicianship for four years; and I continue to use these skills in my practice as a professional musician today. I make it a point to ask all students (or parents for my younger ones) to purchase a notepad where assignments, expectations, exercises, tips/tricks can be written down to help them progress during the year and into the following week of lessons. My favorite aspect about teaching is pushing students beyond the limit they place for themselves. That being said there must be a mutual understanding that I will do all I can to help students get over a "learning hump" as I call it- I have access to a plethora of journals, articles, teaching websites, a personal library, all of these materials can be scanned, printed out, emailed and whatnot for the benefit of my students. You can learn so much about a student in a 30 minute trial lesson! If a new student is not a total beginner, I will ask them to play their favorite song (or one of their favorites if they have trouble choosing just one). After their performance, I ask them what they liked about how they played. Its important for students to always be aware of what they do well. If they arent able to see their strengths on their own then I share with them what I think their strengths are and encourage them to keep that up. Read More
