Instruments: Saxophone Music
For beginning students I always start by asking what they hope to gain or what attracts them to music. Having an understanding of an individuals needs is the first step. From there I follow with fundamentals using Rubank Elementary Method on their respective instrument. for someone who already has an understanding of their musical goals I accommodate my lesson plans based on their current state along with adding exercises that will help ease any difficulties they may be having. I've been teaching music since I was in high school, starting with voice lessons. In college, many of my friends and friends of friends asked me to tutor them in voice, music theory, writing, and various instruments. Now, I have many private students that I meet with in person and over zoom and teach group classes as well. I think it's important that music students get to work on repertoire that excites them. Dependent on the instrument, I generally use essential musical workbooks as well as my own scales and exercises that create a better base to suppliment the workbooks. I find that these general books are useful to keep the student's growth on track, however, my own sound exercises alllow wind players to usually progress at a quicker rate. For more advanced students, once we have discussed what each student hopes to get out of their lessons and what they generally see themselves doing with their instruments in the next few years, we can decide what pieces to work on and what skills to develop. I encourage practice, whether it's one hour a day, 5 minutes a day or somewhere in between, but I understand that contemporary students (especially in New York City) have many obligations in terms of academic and extracurricular activities. It is in knowing this, my first goal is to make the lesson fun and relaxed and never a chore or a source of pressure or anxiety for students or parents. The lesson should be a fun and safe place to learn about and to play music! Read More

I have been teaching for over 45 years, mostly in students' homes. I started in the 1970's in my NYC apartment and since moving to Westchester 30 years ago have been going to student's homes. Many of my students have been accepted to colleges as music majors or minors and my students frequently get the highest ratings in solo competitions. School band directors often recommend me as a coach for their most serious students, since school music programs usually do not have the capacity for intensive individual coaching. Read More

I work with my students from a method book, and then move to add scales, etudes, and repertoire as they advance. Additionally, if I start teaching an older student as a beginner, I believe it is important to teach them at their intellectual level. I never intend to talk down to my students, and I always strive to meet them where they are to raise their level of understanding. Finally, if students are interested in learning a particular song or want to focus on a particular topic, I am always eager to help them with that! Read More
