I'm a young musician who came to the United States from Russia to pursue a career in music. Currently I'm working on my degree in music performance at Fresno Pacific University. I also write my own music and am working on my debut album. Music is a really important part of my life and that's why I want to teach anyone who is interested in learning and understanding music. I strongly believe that everyone can play music no matter what age or skill level you are, I know that you can do it if you will be dedicated enough. Read More

For beginning students who are childern, I use Nancy Faber's Primer and Level One matieral. As soon as they develop a strong foundation using technique, theory, and a basic knowldege of what it means to play piano, I introduce them to a genre that they are passionate about for recital work: whether it is based on a movie, a favorite pop star, or a classical musician. For adult students, I work with Alfred Adult Basic Level One materials which give students a firm grasp on what it means to play the piano, technique, and theory. Read More

I have been teaching private lessons in Manhattan and Brooklyn for the last 7 years. I decided to pursue my studies in music education here in the Central Valley to be closer to my family. I've taught lessons in drums and percussion, ukulele, guitar and piano. No matter what age you may be, my approach is all about having fun and learning your instrument along the way; music is meant to be enjoyed! Read More

I always teach based of what the student knows and/or what the student is interested in. I teach technical aspects, as well as repertoire and music theory. A healthy vocal sound is our number one priority. I integrate music theory within a students music lessons through their repertoire. Students will become familiar with sight-singing melodies and rhythms of various levels. I will introduce repertoire appropriate for the voice type and technical skill level. Read More

I started teaching piano in other people's homes soon after I became a student at College of the Sequoias in Visalia, CA. Since I sang mostly at church, people asked me if their children could learn more about music from someone who has worked on it for a long time. By the time I went to Fresno State, I wasn't able to teach nearly as much, and probably needed teaching, myself! Read More

My teaching method include a combination of technique, artistry, interpretation, expression, musicality, and repertoire. This approach attempts to build synthesis and synergy between the different elements of musicmaking—both vocal and instrumental: the development and honing of sound technique provided a basis for informed and tasteful musicality as well as, by extension, effective and meaningful interpretation and performance of literature. At the same time, an awareness of and attention to expression, emotion, and interpretation informs the building and practice of technique, giving it context and artistic function. Read More

What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
Focus is key. No matter the skill level of the student, or the difficulty of the subject matter, with the right amount of concentration, a dedicated student will be able to gain the self discipline to naturally push their abilities. As a music teacher/ instructor I feel that it is important to give a certain amount of criticism to my students, while still remaining a positive figure of inspiration. I have had a wide range of music instructors in my past and the ones that I feel have been the most effective are the ones that remained positive and patient throughout my development.

How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
If your child can independently express the want to learn a musical instrument on their own, then yes, I believe they are ready to start lessons. It may also be important to consider what goals you have in mind for your child though. I believe that learning a musical instrument, especially at a younger age, can beneficial for a child's growth and development, not only on an academic level, but on a social level as well. It can help improve memory, hand eye coordination, along with reading and comprehension skills.

When will I start to see results?
It varies from student to student depending on their age, development, and dedication. I have had beginner students, younger than 12 years old, able to play full compositions in their first 6 months. Regardless of that, it's important to be patient with every student. Everyone has their own way of learning and developing, and it's easy to get frustrated when you don't see physical results right away. It's my job to try and see where a student's current shortcomings are and help develop them in the right way.

Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
My band/ music technology teacher back in high school was an inspiring figure to me. I feel fortunate to learn early in my life the value of hard work and dedication.

Why did you choose your primary instrument?
Before I took my first formal music lesson, I was always singing as a child. By the time I came to be a teenager playing bands across my hometown in New Jersey, music was already a driving passion, but I never saw myself as the "lead singer" type. The vocals initially became my primary instrument only because I never played in a band with anyone who had the ability to carry a tune like I did, let alone the confidence to deliver a quality performance. By naturally pursuing my love for music, my primary instrument came to me on its own.

10 Songwriting Tips To Help You Write Memorable Music

...a vulnerable state creatively. This might be an uncomfortable thought for musicians who are used to always knowing what and how to play something, but good, meaningful songwriting typically happens without a plan. My songwriting tips will be a lot more helpful to you if you actively remember that it’s perfectly fine and probably a good thing if you feel lost during the songwriting process from time to time.   Tip #1: Don’t wait for inspiration to find you   Whether you’re experienced in music or not, you might subscribe to the belief that the act of songwriting is something purely... Rolling in the Deep Chords for Acoustic Guitar (Adele)

...2 or 3 strings of each chord and you’ll be fine.   Accompaniment Technique   The strumming technique for the Rolling in the Deep chords will consist mainly of down strums with an eighth-note rhythm.   Simply count: 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &. For the majority of the song, focus on playing the bottom 2 or 3 strings of each chord. As the song builds, you can begin adding the full chord gradually. The chorus should use the entire chord sound. There is also a backbeat-strumming technique that helps add flavor to the chorus.   Palm Muting Technique   For the intro and the verse, I suggest using ... Read More

Opera Voice Types

...Carmen, by Bizet. Dramatic Mezzo The dramatic mezzo soprano voice carries considerable weight—singing over the orchestra shouldn’t be at all a problem for the dramatic mezzo soprano. Dramatic voices have historically filled the older and more villainous parts of an opera, and the bulk of the dramatic repertoire was written during the age of German romantic opera. Verdi was also known for his contributions to the dramatic voice, though—listen to this recording of Nadia Krasteva singing the aria “Stride, la vampa.” Of course, you also have to listen to an aria from one of the dramatic mezzo’s most famous roles: the character ... Guitar Gear: A Beginner's Guide

...a heavy beating.   Picks Guitar picks make it easy for a player to pluck the strings. Every guitarist has a personal preference for the thickness and flexibility of the picks that they use, and while there are some slight variations in shape and size, a triangle with rounded edges is the standard.   Choosing guitar gear all comes down to personal preference, and there’s no one piece of gear that’s right for everyone. When choosing gear, it’s best to shop around and figure out what works best for you. You may not need items that other guitarists swear by, so take some time to figure ... Read More

The Best Age to Start Trumpet Lessons

...breath support to get a good tone. The instrument itself requires assembly and cleaning both before and after each time it is played, so the student must be taught how to care for the trumpet. Additionally, the trumpet has some delicate parts and may not be ideal for households with small children – a dented trumpet won’t sound good! As students get older, their interests will often branch out quite a bit. The trumpet is a popular instrument in marching bands, concert band, and jazz band, and even as a solo instrument for all kinds of events such as playing the start spangled banner, taps, etc. A great teacher can help a student develop their technique in order to sound good playing any style of ...
