I believe that positive reinforcement is the best way to encourage my students to attain the confidence that is needed as a performer. Musical expression is a visceral experience and I strive to create a comfortable environment for my students. Because sometimes learning an instrument can be tedious, I like to break my lessons up with warmup, rudiment, etude and dexterity exercises; Scale and theory practices; repertoire development in multiple styles including original works; and finally improvisation and listening. I have been teaching since my college years, as an informal coach, as part of pedagogy or internship assignments, or as a paid instructor. Lessons or work sessions may have been part of readying a friend for a solo in a church gathering, giving tips or pointers for an upcoming stage musical number, assistance with learning an art song, or a formal paid lesson to focus on technique, artistry, diction, interpretation, and delivery. It's really important for me to teach music in a way that people can maintain interest and enjoy learning. With any instrument, music theory, ear training and music analysis is my focus, I think these skills will build a strong foundation for beginners that will serve them well down the road. Also another essential part of my method is teaching correct technique which will help students practice in more a effective and enjoyable way! Read More

When I was teaching piano for younger children, the first books for piano started out with John Thompson. as that was the biggest name in learning piano. Adults, of course, are more advanced readers, and sometimes they need books that are more on their level. Voice students should start out at least around 10, since their vocal chords will be maturing, and they will need training in breathing. I like to try the first lesson with just breathing exercises and vocal techniques, so that when we finally get to a song, it will be easy to test the range. Read More

Seeing my students develop thier own love for music is something that thrills me to my very core. If I have helped a student convey who they are through music, and have them become excited to share that with others, I have done my job well. I will work with each student to set goals for their piano career, and seek to find out what drives thier passion and love for music so that they can be fulfilled.I will talior my teaching style fo fit each student's needs Each student is challenged to practice a minimum of 4-5 times a week 30-60 minutes for each time because practice inspires passion. What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
Focus is key. No matter the skill level of the student, or the difficulty of the subject matter, with the right amount of concentration, a dedicated student will be able to gain the self discipline to naturally push their abilities.
As a music teacher/ instructor I feel that it is important to give a certain amount of criticism to my students, while still remaining a positive figure of inspiration. I have had a wide range of music instructors in my past and the ones that I feel have been the most effective are the ones that remained positive and patient throughout my development.
How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
If your child can independently express the want to learn a musical instrument on their own, then yes, I believe they are ready to start lessons. It may also be important to consider what goals you have in mind for your child though. I believe that learning a musical instrument, especially at a younger age, can beneficial for a child's growth and development, not only on an academic level, but on a social level as well. It can help improve memory, hand eye coordination, along with reading and comprehension skills.
When will I start to see results?
It varies from student to student depending on their age, development, and dedication. I have had beginner students, younger than 12 years old, able to play full compositions in their first 6 months. Regardless of that, it's important to be patient with every student. Everyone has their own way of learning and developing, and it's easy to get frustrated when you don't see physical results right away. It's my job to try and see where a student's current shortcomings are and help develop them in the right way.
Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
My band/ music technology teacher back in high school was an inspiring figure to me. I feel fortunate to learn early in my life the value of hard work and dedication.
Why did you choose your primary instrument?
Before I took my first formal music lesson, I was always singing as a child. By the time I came to be a teenager playing bands across my hometown in New Jersey, music was already a driving passion, but I never saw myself as the "lead singer" type. The vocals initially became my primary instrument only because I never played in a band with anyone who had the ability to carry a tune like I did, let alone the confidence to deliver a quality performance. By naturally pursuing my love for music, my primary instrument came to me on its own.

My grand daughter is interested in playing the piano. We have one in our home and she is always playing it, and pretending she is writing songs. She is 7.
