My teaching style begins with creating a positive environment for the student to keep them encouraged and wanting to continue their study. I try to keep the students engaged by finding a balance of what the students want to work on, as well as what I want them to be working on. I understand that every student learns differently, and I won't teach every student the same way. As a performer, I have appeared as soloist and as a member or small and large chamber ensembles at venues such as Shermerhorn Symphony Center in Nashville, the Kimmel Center, the Fenway Center in Boston, Tenri Cultural Institute and SPECTRUM NYC. For all of my students of any age, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements and learning a recognizable song hand picked by the student and approved by me. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce jazz repertoire, sight reading and things like, technical exercises, jazz improvisation, theory, ear training and classical music etudes. For example, for the advanced high school student I often mold my teachings around college audition requirements and all-state, regional band auditions.
